ASTON, Penn. (Sept. 15, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team found itself short-handed after a 10-day layoff here Tuesday, and with only four players available, the Scarlet Raptors dropped a 5-4 decision against Neumann University.
Rutgers-Camden, which hadn't played since Sept. 5 due to a rainout, won four of the six matches it played on the court, but was forced to forfeit three other ones as it fell to 1-3 on the season. Neumann improved to 2-1.
The Scarlet Raptors' team featured a trio of veterans in senior
Amanda Hickman (Millville, NJ/Millville), sophomore
Angela Errigo (Tabernacle, NJ/Shawnee) and junior
Christine Abacan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), who played the first three singles, respectively. Their fourth player, making her collegiate tennis debut, was junior
Alexa Rocks (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), who was the goalie on the Raptors' lacrosse team during the spring.
Hickman won at first singles, 6-1 and 6-0, while Errigo captured a 6-4, 6-0 victory at second singles and Abacan was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at third singles. Rocks dropped her match at fourth singles, 6-0 and 6-1, before the Raptors forfeited the final two singles spots.
At first doubles, Hickman and Errigo won, 8-4, while Abacan and Rocks lost at second doubles, 8-4. Neumann won the third doubles by forfeit.
Hickman and Errigo both own 4-0 records in singles and 4-0 marks in doubles this season. Hickman increased her career program records to 41 singles, 32 doubles and 73 combined victories.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday at 3:30 when it plays a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at the College of New Jersey.
