Nationally-ranked MSU rallies to top Rutgers-Camden women

CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 9, 2016) – The nationally-ranked Montclair State University women's basketball team outscored Rutgers University-Camden, 34-18, in the final quarter to rally from a seven-point deficit to a 74-65 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
 
Montclair State, which is ranked No. 21 in the USA Today Sports Top 25 Division III Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll and No. 23 in the D3hoops.com poll, improves to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the NJAC.
 
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Scarlet Raptors, who fell to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the NJAC.
 
The Red Hawks have won 19 straight games against Rutgers-Camden and lead the all-time series, 39-15. The last Scarlet Raptor win came at Montclair State on Feb. 12, 2003 by a 74-56 score.
 
After trailing, 33-29, at halftime, the Scarlet Raptors had a big third quarter, outscoring the Red Hawks 18-7 to hold a 47-40 lead heading into the final frame. Montclair State, however, scored 10 of the first 13 points in the fourth quarter, including three treys, to tie the game at 50-50. After the teams traded layups, the Red Hawks took the lead for good, 54-52, on a layup by sophomore guard Kate Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ/Roselle Catholic) with 5:53 remaining. Moments later, sophomore forward Taylor Harmon (Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) added a three-pointer to make it a 57-52 game.
 
Montclair State stretched its lead to nine points, 62-53, before the Scarlet Raptors mounted a comeback on layups by junior forward/center Caroline Santiago (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) and senior guard/forward Kamari Talley (Camden, NJ/Creative Arts). Following a Red Hawk layup, Raptor freshman guard Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) drilled a three-pointer to cut the gap to 64-60 with 1:51 remaining. The Red Hawks, however, closed out the game with a 10-5 run on three layups and four foul shots.
 
In a back-and-forth game that saw both teams lead by as many as 10 points and the score tied on seven occasions, the Scarlet Raptors built a 20-12 lead through one quarter by scoring the final 13 points of the opening frame. After stretching the lead to 24-14 in the second quarter, however, the Red Hawks' press brought Montclair State back into the game. The visitors finally grabbed a 30-29 lead shortly before the half on a layup by sophomore guard/forward Katie Sire (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan), and they extended their advantage to 33-29 at the break.
 
The end of the third quarter belonged to Rutgers-Camden as the Raptors broke a 37-37 tie with a 10-3 run, with eight of those points scored by Talley. The run gave the Raptors a 47-40 lead entering the final quarter before Montclair State rallied for the victory. The Scarlet Raptors made seven of their 27 turnovers in the final quarter.
 
Sire finished with 22 points and eight rebounds for the Red Hawks, aided by 3-for-3 shooting from three-point range. Harmon netted 20 points, aided by 8-for-10 shooting from the field, and added a game-high seven steals, while junior forward Sage Bennett (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Tobie collected six points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
 
Freshman guard Faith Ashby (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) led Montclair State with five assists.
 
Talley finished with a game-high 26 points, although she saw her streak of nine consecutive double-doubles end when she finished with eight rebounds. She also had six steals and a game-high six assists.
 
Sophomore guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) had 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Santiago added 10 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore forward/center Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) collected seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Rutgers-Camden hosts Cairn University at 7 p.m. Monday in a non-conference game. The Scarlet Raptors play a 6 p.m. NJAC game at New Jersey City University Wednesday.
 
Montclair State returns to action Wednesday with an 8 p.m. NJAC game at Stockton University.
