GALLOWAY, N.J. (Oct. 26, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer lost a battle here Wednesday night in a 2-1 setback against Stockton University. The Scarlet Raptors won the war, however, as they qualified for the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs as the fourth seed.
Rutgers-Camden will host fifth seed Montclair State University Saturday at 1 p.m. in a first-round game. Tickets prices are $5 for adults and $2 for students, children and senior citizens. Rutgers-Camden staff and students, with an ID, will be admitted free, courtesy of Rutgers-Camden Student Affairs.
Stockton bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit and scored the deciding goal at 64:16 on a penalty kick by senior forward
Anthony Colofranson (Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gateway). A foul in the box set up the deciding penalty kick.
NJAC playoff bracket
The victory lifts Stockton to 7-7-4 overall and 4-3-2 overall, earning the Ospreys the third seed in the NJAC playoffs with 14 points. Stockton leaped over a logjam of four teams with a 4-4-1 record and 13 points, which included Rutgers-Camden. The Scarlet Raptors earned the fourth seed by virtue of a 2-1 record against the other teams involved in the tie. Montclair State earned the fifth seed and The College of New Jersey captured the sixth and final seed. Kean University was the odd man out, missing the playoffs on a tie-breaker.
The victory was the first for the Ospreys over the Scarlet Raptors since a 5-0 win in Galloway on Oct. 13, 2010. Rutgers-Camden had gone 5-0-2 in the seven series games since then, including a NJAC tournament victory last Nov. 4. Stockton leads the all-time series, 24-18-7.
Rutgers-Camden (8-6-4 overall), which would have been the third seed with a win or a tie, took an early lead when junior back
Travis Chigi (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) scored his second goal of the season. His unassisted shot into the lower left corner came at 29:25.
Less than eight minutes later, Stockton tied the game on a tally by sophomore midfielder
Dan Marino (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township). His goal, on a deflection off a pass, was assisted by sophomore back
Zach Burns (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township).
Colofranson's penalty kick, his eighth goal of the season, broke the tie.
Both teams collected nine shots, while the Scarlet Raptors held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Rutgers-Camden put only one of its shots on goal – the tally by Chigi – as Osprey freshman keeper
Michael Lescano (Union, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) didn't need to make a save in the win.
Rutgers-Camden sophomore goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) notched two saves.
