Box Score
CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 9, 2016) – Senior forward
Gavin Yingling (Salisbury, MD/James M. Bennett) scored from a crowded box midway through the first half and that was all that the United States Merchant Marine Academy needed as it hung on to edge Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game here Sunday afternoon.

The victory lifts the Mariners to 7-4-2, including 5-1 in their last five games. Rutgers-Camden, meanwhile, falls to 7-3-3, snapping a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1).

USMMA, out of Kings Point, New York, notched the game's lone tally when Yingling scored his team-leading 10th goal in a crowded box at 20:15, assisted by junior forward
Jon Tarbox (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg Area) and freshman midfielder
Austin Flores (Wichita, KS/Blue Valley Northwest).

Rutgers-Camden applied plenty of second-half pressure and had a few chances to tie the game, including a header barely over the crossbar by junior forward
Shane Guyer (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) with 5:50 remaining. Mariners senior goalie
Cory Maier (Hampton, VA/Kecoughtan) earned the shutout with five saves as the Scarlet Raptors held a 12-10 edge in shots and a 7-2 margin in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) played the first half for the Scarlet Raptors, facing five shots and allowing the one goal, while junior
Kellen Groover (Roebling, NJ/Life Center Academy) faced five shots in the second half. Both goalies made one save.

Rutgers-Camden returns to the pitch Wednesday for a 7 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game at nationally-ranked Rowan University. USMMA hosts the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline Conference game at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday night.
