Jackie Rodriguez (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) scored 11 points in the first quarter as the William Paterson University women's basketball team established a 10-point lead and the Pioneers went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 75-55, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference makeup game here Monday night.
The game was a makeup of the contest postponed by the Jan. 23 blizzard.
Rutgers-Camden, which had won the first meeting between the teams this season to snap an 18-game losing streak in the all-time series, falls to 11-8 overall and 6-7 in the NJAC with its third straight loss. Paterson improves to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the conference.
Paterson leads the all-time series, 49-10.
After Rutgers-Camden scored the first four points of the game, Paterson went on a 10-point run to take the lead for good. Rodriguez started that run with back-to-back three-pointers on her way to 11 first-quarter points that gave the Pioneers a 21-11 advantage.
By halftime, the host team held a 41-22 lead, with Rodriguez totaling 14 points and senior guard
Brittany Harden (Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) adding 10. For the Scarlet Raptors, senior guard/forward
Kamari Talley (Camden, NJ/Creative Arts) had 10 points and nine rebounds at halftime.
Paterson stretched its lead to as many as 25 points (71-46) in the second half.
Rodriguez finished with 25 points, aided by 9-for-16 shooting from the floor, including a torrid 7-for-13 from three-point range. Harden added 15 points, seven assists and four steals for the Pioneers, while senior forward
Alex Milne (Howell, NJ/Howell) added 11 points.
Paterson held the advantage off the boards, 35-26, and shot 51.7 percent from the floor (30-for-58). Rutgers-Camden shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53).
Talley finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Scarlet Raptors as she notched her 14th double-double in her 16 games this season. Her 14 rebounds and two blocked shots were game-high totals.
Sophomore forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) added 17 points for the Scarlet Raptors. Those points hiked her career total at Rutgers-Camden past the 500 plateau. She now has 502 points in her 44 career collegiate games.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Stockton University in a 6 p.m. NJAC contest.
