Box Score

NEWARK, N.J. (Sept. 17, 2016) – Sophomore midfielder Melissa Peel (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) scored her first career goal and assisted on the game-winning tally by sophomore back Maggie Sande (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) as the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team opened its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule with a 2-0 win at Rutgers-Newark here Saturday.

Camden improves to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC, stretching its unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2). The last time the Scarlet Raptors were two games over .500 came in 2008, when they started the year at 6-2 before finishing at 8-10-2. The current five-game unbeaten streak is their longest since a seven-game string (6-0-1) in 2007.

Newark falls to 1-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The win hikes the Scarlet Raptors' all-time record to 12-2-3 against Rutgers-Newark.

The Scarlet Raptors notched the only goal they needed at 15:55 when a corner kick by Peel bounded off the crossbar and was headed into the goal by Sande. It was Sande's second goal of the year, with both of them proving to be game winners.

Early in the second half, Peel provided an insurance goal after taking a through ball from senior midfielder Sara Bockius (Medford, NJ/Shawnee). In a one-on-one with Newark keeper Diana Carvalho, Peel worked her way around the netminder to shoot into an open net.

Rutgers-Camden held a slim 11-10 edge in shots and a 4-3 margin in corner kicks. Carvalho made five saves for the Scarlet Raiders, while junior keeper Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) notched seven saves for the Raptors to earn her third shutout of the season. She extended her own program career record to 12 shutouts.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it plays a big non-conference game at 4 p.m. at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The Blue Jays are ranked No. 22 in the latest D3soccer.com Top 25 poll.
