CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2017) – After a slow start to its season, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team is hoping its current streak is a sign of brighter things to come.
The Scarlet Raptors stretched their unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1) here Sunday and evened their record at .500 as they defeated Penn State-Abington, 2-1, in a non-conference game.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 5-5-2, marking its first time at the .500 mark since it was 1-1 after its game on Sept. 2. Abington, which also was hoping to reach the .500 mark, falls to 4-6, snapping its two-game winning streak. The Nittany Lions are 1-6 on the road this season.
Despite being out-shot, 9-7, in the opening half, it was the Scarlet Raptors who scored both goals in the opening 45 minutes. In the 31st minute, senior forward
Shane Guyer (Hammonton NJ/Hammonton) launched one of his long throw-ins from the left side to the far post, where senior midfielder
Clayton Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) finished the play. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Taylor and the second assist for Guyer.
Late in the half, the Scarlet Raptors padded their lead when freshman forward
Skyler Diggs (Delran, NJ/Delran) flicked in a corner kick by junior midfielder
Vincenzo Masitti (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt). For Diggs, it was his fourth goal of the season and second game-winning tally, while Masitti's assist gave him four points during the 2-0-1 run this week, including a goal in a 1-1 tie at TCNJ Wednesday and assists in wins both Saturday and Sunday over Ramapo and Penn State-Abington, respectively.
While Rutgers-Camden had numerous chances to put the game away in the second half, holding a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 4-0 margin in corner kicks, it was Abington that scored the lone goal. Following a Raptor foul, Abington's
Jose Palomeque took the restart and his a rocket that was saved off the right post on a terrific play by Raptor freshman goalie
Kieran Burns (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township). The rebound fell into the box near the goal mouth, where a scramble resulted in a goal by
Dmitri Bourlako. It was assisted by
Chris Van Pelt.
Rutgers-Camden finished with a 16-15 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) played the first half for the Scarlet Raptors, making four saves, while Burns had one save in the second half. Abington sophomore
Ty Morris played the full 90 minutes in goal, making two saves. He also was aided by a backsave.
Rutgers-Camden hosts nationally-ranked Haverford College in a 7 p.m. non-conference game Wednesday. Penn State-Abington is idle until Saturday, when it travels to Keuka College for a 1 p.m. North Eastern Athletic Conference game.
