CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 14, 2017) – With one shot late in the second half, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team saw a school record fall and stopped a long streak of frustration against a New Jersey Athletic Conference rival.
Freshman forward
Meghan Wachira (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) notched her sixth game-winning goal of the season to set a new program standard and the Scarlet Raptors defeated Kean University, 1-0, here Saturday for their first win over the Cougars since 2006.
The victory snapped the Raptors' two-game losing streak and lifted them to 2-5 in the NJAC and 6-8 overall. All six game-winning goals have been tallied by Wachira, who broke the single-season program mark of five set by Heather Greenwald in 2003. It was Wachira's 11th goal overall, the most for a Scarlet Raptor since Samantha Sharp notched 11 in 2009.
Kean falls to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the NJAC, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Cougars, who are now 14-3-3 in their all-time series against Rutgers-Camden, had been 9-0-1 against the Scarlet Raptors in their last 10 outings. Rutgers-Camden hadn't posted a win in the series since a 2-1 victory on Sept. 23, 2006 at Kean. The Raptors hadn't defeated the Cougars in Camden since Oct. 15, 2005, also a 1-0 win.
The decisive goal came after senior midfielder
Kaitlyn Ennis (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) threaded a perfect pass through the middle of the Cougars' defense, springing Wachira for a one-on-one with sophomore goalie
Casey McDonnell (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional). Wachira was able to work the ball past McDonnell at the top of the box and slide in her record-setting goal at 74:42.
It was the fifth assist of the season for the hard-working Ennis, one of many players who had an outstanding game in the Raptors' win.
Although her shot was one of only two Raptor shots on goal for the game, the Scarlet Raptors turned in a fine all-around effort as they posted only their second shutout ever in the history of the 20-game series. Kean finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. McDonnell made only one save in the Cougars' net, while Raptor senior keeper
Katie Gurba (Westhampton, NJ/Holy Cross) notched eight saves and was aided by one backsave. It was her first shutout of the season and extended her program career shutout mark to 13.
While registering their first NJAC shutout since a 2-0 win over Rutgers-Newark on Sept. 17, 2016, the Scarlet Raptors received outstanding play from backs
Maggie Sande (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), Brielle Stoner (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Kacie Walton (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) and
Maddie Blanda (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights). The Raptors' defense handed Kean only its third shutout loss of the season.
Rutgers-Camden is idle until next Saturday when the Scarlet Raptors host William Paterson University in a 1 p.m. NJAC game. It will be the Raptors' last home game of the season and Rutgers-Camden will celebrate Senior Day, honoring six graduating players:
Sarah Boucot (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI), Kaitlyn Ennis (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington), Rachel Fanrak (Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI), Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross), Cassidy McSorley (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) and
Maggie Sande (Medford, NJ/Shawnee).
