CAMDEN, N.J. (Apr. 15, 2017) – The Ramapo College men's tennis team has won the Great Northeast Athletic Conference title for the past four seasons and the Roadrunners are looking to add another title to their haul.
Ramapo swept Rutgers University-Camden, 9-0, here Saturday in a match between two teams that entered the day tied for first in the GNAC South Division with 1-0 records. The Roadrunners improve to 2-0 in the conference and 7-6 overall with their fourth straight win. Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in GNAC play.
The match was the fourth time Rutgers-Camden has faced Ramapo since joining the GNAC in 2015, and the Roadrunners have posted 9-0 wins each time, winning all three regular-season matches and one in last year's conference semifinals.
Despite the final score, the Scarlet Raptors has a few close matches. At fourth singles, freshman
Jason Mehta (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision, while senior
Anthony Gendin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) lost, 6-2, 6-2, at first singles and freshman
Khoa Ly (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was defeated, 6-3, 6-1 at sixth singles.
Freshman
Jair Norman (Sicklerville, NJ/Williamstown) was defeated, 6-1, 6-1, at third singles. Senior
Ryan Christopher (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) and junior
Jake Collette-Nippins (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) dropped 6-0, 6-0 matches at the second and fifth flights, respectively.
Gendin and Christopher had the closest doubles match at second doubles, losing by an 8-6 score. Mehta and Norman were defeated, 8-0, at first singles and Collette-Nippins and Ly lost an 8-2 decision at third doubles.
Rutgers-Camden will play its final home match of the season on Monday when it entertains Neumann University at 3:30 p.m. The Scarlet Raptors will honor Gendin and Christopher that day with a Senior Day celebration.
On Saturday, April 22, the Scarlet Raptors will travel to Rutgers-Newark for a 12 p.m. match that will decide the second berth in the GNAC playoffs from the South Division. Both teams have lost to Ramapo and defeated Albertus Magnus in the four-team South Division. The winner of that match will play in the GNAC semifinals April 29.
