CAMDEN, N.J. (Apr. 15, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis team celebrated Senior Day here Monday to honor the duo of
Anthony Gendin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) and
Ryan Christopher (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township).
Gendin and Christopher returned the favor by tying a program record for doubles partners as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Neumann University, 7-2, in a non-conference match.
Teaming at second doubles, Gendin and Christopher posted an 8-3 victory to notch their 12th win as doubles partners over the last two years. They tied the program mark of 12 wins by doubles partners, which was accomplished twice, both times involving Terry Long. Long teamed with Ken Stubblefield for 12 doubles wins from 2012-13 and with Lloyd Pearson for a dozen doubles victories from 2013-15.
Rutgers-Camden had a pair of victories before the match even started, since Neumann was short one player and had to forfeit at sixth singles and third doubles. Raptor freshman
Khoa Ly (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) picked up a default win at the sixth singles spot and both Ly and junior
Jake Collette-Nippins (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) earned the default at third doubles.
The win lifted the Scarlet Raptors' record to 4-5. It was their third win in their last four matches. Neumann, meanwhile fell to 4-5 with its second straight loss.
In addition to the record-tying win at second doubles, the Raptors' first doubles team of freshmen
Jason Mehta (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and
Jair Norman (Sicklerville, NJ/Williamstown) notched an 8-4 victory.
In singles play, Rutgers-Camden took three of the six matches, with Christopher winning at second singles (6-0, 6-0), Norman capturing a victory at third singles (6-0, 6-2) and Collette-Nippins winning in the fifth slot (6-1, 6-1). Gendin dropped a long match at first singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-10, and Mehta lost at fourth singles, 5-7, 1-6.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday at 12 p.m. in a key conference match at Rutgers-Newark. The winner of that match will qualify for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference semifinals, which will be held April 29.
