CAMDEN, N.J. (Apr. 2, 2017) – Senior captain
Anthony Gendin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) captured victories at first singles and second doubles here Sunday, but the Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis team dropped a non-conference match against the College of Staten Island, 6-3.
The Scarlet Raptors fall to 1-4, while the Dolphins improve to 2-3.
Gendin won, 7-5, 6-4 at first singles to raise his season record to 2-3 at the Raptors' top spot. He also teamed with senior
Ryan Christopher (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) for an 8-4 victory at second doubles as the pair raised their season doubles mark to 4-1.
Rutgers-Camden's other win came from its first doubles pair of freshmen
Jair Norman (Sicklerville, NJ/Williamstown) and
Jason Mehta (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township). They notched their first collegiate doubles win with an 8-4 victory.
Junior
Jake Collette-Nippins (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) and freshman
Khoa Ly (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) lost an 8-5 decision at third doubles.
After Gendin's win at first singles, Staten Island swept the remaining singles matches to capture the victory. Christopher dropped a 6-7 (2-7), 3-6 decision at second singles, Norman lost 2-6, 3-6 at third singles and Mehta lost his match at fourth singles, 4-6, 2-6. Collette-Nippins fell at fifth singles, 1-6, 3-6 and Ly dropped a 3-6, 0-6 decision in the sixth singles spot.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday when they play their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference match of the season with a 1 p.m. start at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut. The Raptors return home on Sunday, April 9, to host Baruch College at 1 p.m.
