CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 23, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team has made some big strides this season, and the improvement of the young Scarlet Raptors became evident here Saturday as they took Immaculata University to the limit before losing a non-conference match, 5-4.
Immaculata, which defeated Rutgers-Camden by 8-1 scores in both of the last two seasons, improves to 2-0. Rutgers-Camden falls to 1-4 against a rugged early-season schedule.
Rutgers-Camden received victories from its second, third and fourth singles players, as well as its first doubles team. Two of those wins involved sophomore
Danielle Lemma (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township), who captured her match at third singles (6-2, 6-1) and teamed with fellow sophomore co-captain
Annalise Kipp (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) to win an 8-3 decision at first doubles.
Freshman
Jenna O'Lexy (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) won a marathon match at second singles (6-1, 2-6, 7-5) and freshman
Abby Banner (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) captured a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fourth singles.
Kipp lost a 6-0, 6-2 match at first singles, only her second loss in five matches this season at the top spot. Freshman
Anna Archut (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) was defeated at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-2, and freshman
Christina Lee (West Deptford, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) dropped her match at sixth singles by the same 6-3, 6-2 score.
At second doubles, O'Lexy and Archut extended their Immaculata opponents to the limit before losing, 9-7. Lee and sophomore
Ina San Buenaventura (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) were defeated at third doubles, 8-4.
Rutgers-Camden will play a 1 p.m. non-conference match Sunday, Oct. 1, when it hosts Penn State-Brandywine.
