Gwynedd Valley, PA (March 10, 2018) – For the second season in a row, the Rutgers University-Camden women's lacrosse team opened a new year with a win. This year, the Scarlet Raptors traveled to Gwynedd Mercy University and took down the Griffins in a tight matchup, 16-15.
Rutgers-Camden got off to a hot start in the first 15 minutes of the season, outscoring Gwynedd-Mercy 6-1. That surge was led by senior midfielder
Jessica Mayer (Cinnaminson, NJ, Cinnaminson), who tallied 3 of the Raptors' 6 goals in that span. Senior midfielder
Nicole Martin (Delran, NJ, Delran) also contributed 2 goals in that window, while senior midfielder
Sarah Boucot (Sicklerville, NJ, Paul VI) recorded her first points of the season after missing all of the 2017 season due to injury.

Nicole Curry (Maple Shade, NJ, Camden Catholic) fired home her first Scarlet Raptor goal to close out the scoring for Rutgers-Camden in the opening half.
Curry spent her first three seasons of her collegiate career playing at Neumann University.
Rutgers-Camden's offense was hot in the first half, outscoring the Griffins 9-5. Although the Raptors extended their lead to 10-5 on a goal from senior defender
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ, Camden Catholic) to open up the second half, the Griffins netted 5 straight goals to tie the game at 10. It was
Racobaldo's first career points as a lacrosse player for the Scarlet Raptors.
Martin netted her 4
th goal of the game to extend the Raptors' lead to 11-10, although it was short-lived as the Griffins tied the game just 11 seconds later. Back and forth action saw the Griffins greatly trying to catch the high-flying attack of Rutgers-Camden.
Mayer recorded her 7
th tally of the game on an assist from
Boucot with 1:19 left in the second half, which proved to be the game-winning goal after a late push by Gwynedd Mercy.
Boucot ended the day with a team-high 3 assists, while
Martin provided 6 goals.
Mayer's 7 goals on the day tied for 6
th highest single-game total in program history. Sophomore defender
Kacie Walton's (Columbus, NJ, Northern Burlington) 4 caused turnovers were a game-high and also tied for 10
th highest single-game total in program history, only two shy of the record 6. Senior defender
Megan Everett (Marlton, NJ, Cherokee) contributed 4 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers. With
Everett's 2 caused turnovers and
Martin's 3 caused turnovers, both surpassed
Holly Cusick's program record of 52 (2013-2016). Both players now share the program record at 53.
Freshman goalkeeper
Brittany Watson (Millville, NJ, Millville) turned away 12 of the 27 Griffins' shots on goal to earn her first career win. She also collected 2 ground balls and 1 caused turnover on the afternoon. Her record on the season increases to 1-0 in the Scarlet Raptor cage.
