CAMDEN, N.J. (March 31, 2018) – When the New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball season opened with a doubleheader here Saturday, it allowed Rutgers University-Camden to pitch a pair of aces in its first two NJAC games of the year.
Junior
Ian Scheidemann (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and senior
Carter Fichter (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) lived up to that billing.
Scheidemann tossed a two-hit shutout in the opening game and Fichter worked seven innings of five-hit ball in the nightcap, allowing only one unearned run, as the Scarlet Raptors swept William Paterson University, 2-0 and 4-1.
Rutgers-Camden, which hiked its winning streak to six games, improved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference. William Paterson, which saw its own six-game winning streak snapped, fell to 11-7 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Monday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game at Keystone College in La Plume, Penn.
Rutgers-Camden 2, William Paterson 0
Scheidemann dominated the Pioneers, striking out 11 batters without issuing a walk in his two-hit shutout. One of those hits was an infield single by freshman center fielder Steven DiGirolamo to open the game, that deflected off Scheidemann's glove and died in the grass, giving Raptor junior second baseman
Chris Jones (Washington Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) no chance to make a play. The only other Paterson hit was a single to left with one out in the second inning by sophomore third baseman Carlos Perez, who was erased on a double play on the next batter.
Only two Pioneers reached base the rest of the game, one on a fifth-inning error and one as a hit batsman with two out in the eighth inning. Scheidemann (3-0) struck out the side in the third inning and collected a pair of strikeouts in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings.
Rutgers-Camden scored single runs in the first and fourth innings off tough-luck losing pitcher Corey Martinez, who worked 6-2/3 innings, allowing five hits, four walks and two runs, only one of them earned. Martinez (3-1) struck out one.
In the opening frame, sophomore catcher
Tyler Travis (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) reached on a one-out walk and was erased on a fielder's choice by freshman first baseman
R.J. Concepcion (Audubon, NJ/Audubon). After a passed ball chased Concepcion to second, sophomore left fielder
John Tedeschi (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) followed with a line drive RBI double to the left field fence, barely over the Pioneers' left fielder.
The Raptors scored their other run in the fourth inning after Tedeschi drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a pair of ground outs. He scored on a double to right by senior right fielder
Brandon Cornelius (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek).
Cornelius (2-for-3) and sophomore shortstop
Nolan Gerold (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic), who went 2-for-4, accounted for four of the Raptors' six hits off a pair of William Paterson pitchers.
Rutgers-Camden 4, William Paterson 1
The Scarlet Raptors jumped on Pioneers starter Chris Babb (1-3) for three runs in the first inning before he settled down and pitched into the sixth inning. That was all Fichter needed as he raised his record to 3-1, scattering five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out seven and allowed only the unearned run in the second inning on a double, an error and a passed ball.
Sophomore
Daniel Beebe (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) worked the final two innings to earn his first save, allowing one hit and one walk, while striking out three.
Camden opened the game with consecutive singles by freshman center fielder
Billy Eisler (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), Travis and Concepcion. Concepcion's hit plated Eisler. After a sacrifice by Tedeschi, Jones singled up the middle to plate both Travis and Concepcion.
The Raptors added their final run in the seventh after a walk to Eisler. He stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before scoring on Concepcion's sacrifice fly to right.
Eisler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while sophomore designated hitter
Matt Yanick (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) was 2-for-4.
