GLASSBORO, N.J. (Nov. 26, 2019) – The Rowan University women's basketball team placed five players in double figures and defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 82-60, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams here Tuesday night.
The Profs improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden suffered its first defeat after tying a program record with a 4-0 start. The Raptors are 0-1 in NJAC play.
The win was the third straight for Rowan over Rutgers-Camden, dating back to last year, and gave the Profs a 55-17 lead in the all-time series.
The Profs never trailed and were tied only once, at 2-2, as they raced to an 18-6 lead after one quarter behind 10 points from junior guard Alexis Kriley. By halftime, the Profs had stretched their lead to 41-21, with Kriley's 10 points being joined by nine from freshman forward Eliana Santa and eight from sophomore guard Grace Marshall. Rowan led by 20 or more points for nearly the entire second half, as the Raptors were able to cut the gap to 19 points only twice. The Profs' biggest lead, at 30 points, was 61-31.
Freshman guard Nicole Mallard and sophomore guard Grace Marshall finished leading the Profs' balanced attack with 13 points apiece, while Kriley notched 12, freshman forward Eliana Santana had 11 and sophomore forward Jazlyn Duverglas added 10.
Sophomore center Ayanna Johnson grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds for Rowan, while Mallard had a game-high seven assists.
Rutgers-Camden received 20 points from freshman guard
Taylor Martin, who shot a blistering 6-for-9 from three-point range and 7-for-11 overall from the floor. Williams added 16 points, while freshman center
Kayla Newton hauled down 10 rebounds and junior guard
Shane Holmes dished off five assists.
Rowan shot 28-for-77 (36.4 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden was 20-for-62 (32.3), but the Profs dominated the boards, 57-43. Rutgers-Camden made 25 turnovers, while Rowan had 18.
The Scarlet Raptors travel to Washington, D.C., on Sunday to face Gallaudet University in a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
