LYNCHBURG, Virginia (March 15, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball program waited nearly two weeks between Opening Day and its next games, but the Scarlet Raptors didn't show any rust here Friday in a non-conference doubleheader at the University of Lynchburg.
Playing a pair of seven-inning games after 13 days off due to three postponements, the Scarlet Raptors collected 21 hits on the day as they defeated the Hornets, 12-2, in the opener and 7-2 in the nightcap.
The Scarlet Raptors, 2-2, will begin their spring break trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Sunday. They will face Springfield College (Springfield, Mass.) in a doubleheader, beginning at 12 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden 12, Lynchburg 2
Rutgers-Camden scored in each of the first five innings, including a big five-run third, as it posted its first win of the season. The Scarlet Raptors collected 10 hits, including two singles by senior second baseman
Chris Jones, who added two RBIs and one run scored.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, sophomore left fielder
R.J. Concepcion was hit by a pitch and stole second. He scored on a single by Jones, giving the Scarlet Raptors the lead for good. The Raptors added two more runs in the second when sophomore shortstop
Mike Paciocco was hit by a pitch with two outs. He scored on a triple by freshman center fielder
Brett Yurgin, who later scored on a passed ball.
The Raptors sent 10 batters to the plate in their five-run third inning, which was sparked by a leadoff triple from junior third baseman
Matthew Stoots. Walks to junior DH
Matt Yanick and freshman first baseman
R.J. McGettigan loaded the bases and knocked out Lynchburg starter Jason Wood. Raptor sophomore right fielder
Billy Eisler greeted reliever Phil D'Ambrosio with a two-run double to right. A fielder's choice by Paciocco, that resulted in a throwing error, plated both McGettigan and Eisler.
The Raptors added two runs apiece in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Senior
Ian Scheidemann (1-0) earned his first win of the season, working six innings and allowing eight hits, two walks and two earned runs. He struck out three. Freshman
Colin Carr, making his collegiate debut, pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing two hits and striking out two.
Rutgers-Camden 7, Lynchburg 2
Senior
Steven Bloyed (1-1) hurled a six-hit gem for his first win of the season, striking out six without issuing a walk. Both runs Lynchburg scored were unearned as a result of errors in the first and seventh innings.
Rutgers-Camden struck immediately in the first inning on a leadoff triple by Yurgin, who scored on a ground out by junior catcher
Tyler Travis. After the Hornets tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame, the Raptors took the lead for good in the second inning. Jones stroked his first of two doubles in the game, advanced to third on a fly out by Yanick and scored on a ground out by McGettigan.
The Raptors notched an unearned run in the third and scored twice in the fourth on a two-run single by Travis. In their two-run sixth, Eisler singled home one run and scored the final one on the back end of a double steal, swiping home.
Travis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the game, while Jones had two doubles and Yanick went 2-for-4.
