Rutgers-Camden rallies past WPU in NJAC volleyball match

CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 12, 2021) – It took one set for the Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team to find its stride here Tuesday night.

Once the Scarlet Raptors got untracked, they dispatched William Paterson University in four sets in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match. Rutgers-Camden won by scores of 17-25, 25-12, 25-17 and 25-12 to raise its record to 14-6 overall and 3-2 in the NJAC.

The Scarlet Raptors have won three straight NJAC matches and have captured four of their last five overall matches.

William Paterson falls to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the NJAC. The Pioneers have now lost three straight matches against Rutgers-Camden and six of their last seven in the head-to-head series.

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raptors fell behind for good at 4-5 on their way to the loss. In the second set, they took a quick 4-0 lead and, after Paterson cut the gap to 4-2, scored the next eight points to open up a 12-2 advantage. They clinched the win on a Paterson service error.

A Paterson service error broke a 9-9 tie in the third set and sophomore Kaliyah Moss followed with a kill to give the Scarlet Raptors an 11-9 advantage. They clinched the set when a pair of seniors combined for the final point as Brinn Hassan set up a kill by Devyn Cobb.

The Scarlet Raptors also took the lead in the final set, 6-5, on a service error and eventually clinched the set and the match on a Paterson attack error.

Sophomore Erica Nebrich finished with 13 kills and seven service aces, while Moss had a double-double of 12 kills and 15 digs. She also added six assisted blocks.

Cobb delivered four assisted blocks.

Hassan finished with 36 assists, while senior Morgan Fox delivered 25 digs. Fox, who was named the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, now owns 996 career digs. She will become only the fifth Scarlet Raptor to reach the 1,000-dig milestone. That achievement should happen when the Scarlet Raptors return to action Thursday with a 7 p.m. NJAC match at Rowan University in Glassboro.
