Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Freshmen power offense as Raptor women blank NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Oct. 16, 2021) – After holding the nation's top-ranked team to one goal in a loss on Wednesday, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team returned to its winning ways in the New Jersey Athletic Conference here Saturday afternoon.

The Scarlet Raptors rode a three-point performance from freshman forward Emily Owens as they defeated New Jersey City University, 3-0, hiking their record to 5-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in NJAC play. It was the Raptors' fourth win in their last five games, interrupted only by Wednesday's 1-0 loss to The College of New Jersey.

The three-goal output was the first for Rutgers-Camden since a 3-1 victory over Ramapo College in the NJAC semifinals during the spring semester, when the pandemic-altered 2020 season was delayed and played. That game came on April 10, 2021.

Rutgers-Camden has won its last four games against NJCU and leads the all-time series, 17-5.

The Scarlet Raptors took the lead at 14:06 after freshman midfielder Alyson Petro curled a corner kick toward the back post. It was put in the net accidentally by a Gothic Knight defender for an own goal.

Freshman Hannah Crowley made it a 2-0 game in the 37th minute with her second career goal. Owens notched her first career point with the assist.

Owens added her first career goal with 3:45 remaining in the first half, assisted by junior Mya Bocchicchio.

Rutgers-Camden held a 23-3 advantage in shots during the game and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie Kayla McKeever played the first 79:27 in goal for the Scarlet Raptors, making one save while earning the win. Freshman Michaela Graham finished the game, making one save in 10:33 minutes of playing time in her collegiate debut.

For NJCU, sophomore Marissa Lotierzo made four saves while playing the first half of the game. Senior Cidney Lee-Sam played the final 45 minutes, making eight saves.
