Volleyball team advances to ECAC title match

ALFRED, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2021) – Sophomore Isabella Choice collected 10 of her team's 35 kills and hit .588 to power the Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team into the ECAC Championship final with a 3-0 sweep over Hunter College here Friday night.

The third-seeded Scarlet Raptors won by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-13 to raise their record to 21-9. Second-seeded Hunter closes its season at 13-14.

Rutgers-Camden will face top-seeded Kean University (17-12) Saturday at 11 a.m. in the championship match. Kean defeated host Alfred State, 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20), in Friday's first semifinal match. Alfred State, the fourth seed, closed its season at 18-4.

Rutgers-Camden lost to Kean twice during the season in New Jersey Athletic Conference action, dropping a 3-1 home match on Oct. 19 and a 3-0 decision at Kean Nov. 2 in a NJAC quarterfinal match.

Ironically, the only ECAC victory the Scarlet Raptors ever recorded before Friday night was a 3-1 win over Hunter College in the first round of the 2012 championships. The Raptors won, 17-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-22 on Nov. 7, 2012 before losing a semifinal match against Elmira College on Nov. 10.

This trip is the fourth to the ECAC Championships under Head Coach David Gurst, who also led his team to the tournament in 2015, 2016 and 2017. This time, the Raptors gave Gurst his first ECAC victory.

In addition to 10 kills by Choice, sophomores Dyamond Free and Kaliyah Moss notched seven kills apiece, while hitting .700 and .385, respectively. Moss also produced five blocks (three solo, two assisted), while Choice and Free had three apiece.

Senior Brinn Hassan led the way with 27 assists and added two service aces. Sophomore Erich Nebrich had four aces, senior Morgan Fox drilled three aces and Choice added two aces.

Fox led the team with 13 digs, while seniors Haley Novak and Savannah Hayes added five and four digs, respectively.

As a team, the Scarlet Raptors hit .341.
