CAMDEN, N.J. (Feb. 6, 2021) – In the unique home-and-home Friday/Saturday format that is the New Jersey Athletic Conference basketball season during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rutgers University-Newark men got their season off to a good start at the expense of Rutgers-Camden.
The Scarlet Raiders posted a 73-42 victory here Saturday afternoon, earning a sweep of the back-to-back weekend set. Newark had opened its season with a 67-48 home win over Camden Friday night.
Junior guard Abe Kromah paced the winners (2-0 overall/2-0 NJAC) with 16 points and three assists, while junior guard Quincy Rutherford added 13 points. The Scarlet Raiders shot 29-for-48 (60.4 percent) from the floor and held a 30-23 edge in rebounds.
Newark led practically the whole game, save for a 3-2 deficit courtesy of an early trey by Raptor freshman guard
Gavin Henry. The Scarlet Raiders answered with 11 straight points and the closest the Raptors came after that was six points (14-8).
The Scarlet Raiders opened up leads as large as 36 points (67-31 and 71-35) in the second half.
Rutgers-Camden (0-2 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC) received 15 points from Henry, while sophomore guard
Tyree Mann-Barnes added 11. Mann-Barnes and freshman forward
Sam Dolphin both grabbed six rebounds to tie for the game high with Newark's Hassan Farhat.
Rutgers-Camden faces The College of New Jersey on Feb. 12 and 13 in a home-and-home series. Friday night's game will be in Camden at 7 p.m.
