Kean volleyball team sweeps Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 13, 2022) – The Kean University volleyball team swept past Rutgers University-Camden, 3-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match here Thursday night.
 
The Cougars won by scores of 25-16, 25-11 and 25-17.
 
Kean, which has won five of its last six matches, improves to 11-8 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC, tying for second place in the conference with Stockton University.
 
Rutgers-Camden sits in fourth place in the NJAC with a 4-3 mark, while falling to 9-10 overall.
 
In the opening set, Kean took the lead at 3-2 and held it the rest of the way for a 25-16 win. The Cougars followed that same script in the second set, going ahead for good at 3-2 on the way to a 25-11 victory.
 
The third set was much tighter, with the score tied several times and the Scarlet Raptors taking their lone lead at 15-14 on an attack error by the Cougars. Kean followed with the next four points to take the lead for good and scored the last seven points after Rutgers-Camden cut the gap to 17-18.
 
Kean received 11 kills and four block assists from junior outside hitter Ashley Smith, while sophomore middle hitter Anne Beckemeyer had eight kills, six block assists and hit .538. Junior setter Kylie Brua dished off 33 assists.
 
Junior middle hitter/outside hitter Isabella Choice notched six kills three blocks (one solo) and two service aces for Rutgers-Camden, while junior outside hitter/right side Erica Nebrich had five kills and six digs.
 
Senior libero Morgan Fox led the Scarlet Raptors with 12 digs and senior Brinn Hassan delivered 12 assists and five digs.
 
Senior defensive specialist Haley Novak tied Choice for team-high honors with two service aces.
 
The Scarlet Raptors return to action with a busy weekend, which includes an away tri-match at Marywood University Saturday (playing Marywood and Marymount) and a home tri-match Sunday (playing Immaculata and Moravian). The first match starts at 11 a.m. each day.
