GALLOWAY, N.J. (Oct. 25, 2022) – With an injury-depleted roster and a road match against one of the traditional powerhouse programs in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, the Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team was at a disadvantage from the start here Tuesday night.
Yet, although the Scarlet Raptors lost in three sets (18-25, 11-25, 9-25) against Stockton University, that didn't keep Rutgers-Camden from witnessing program history.
Senior setter
Brinn Hassan collected 19 assists to become the program's career assist leader, hiking her total to 2,710. Hassan had entered the match with 2,691 assists, one behind the long-time career record-holder Stephanie Miller (2009-2012).
Hassan tied the record on the first point of the match, setting up a kill by junior outside hitter
Dyamond Free. After Stockton tied the first set at 1-1, Hassan again assisted a kill by Free to set the record.
Rutgers-Camden built an 8-3 lead in the first set before Stockton rallied to take the lead for good, 13-12, on a kill by sophomore middle hitter Teleyah Witherspoon.
Rutgers-Camden held only one lead, 3-2, in the second set and fell behind at 5-4 as the Ospreys ripped off the first of seven straight points to build an 11-4 lead. Trailing, 18-11, the Raptors watched Stockton close out the set with the last seven points.
The third set saw the Ospreys win the first three points before the Scarlet Raptors cut the gap to 3-4. Stockton ran off the next seven points to put the set out of reach.
The results leave Rutgers-Camden with a 13-14 record overall and a 4-4 mark in the NJAC. Stockton stands at 18-7 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
Senior outside hitter Haley Green paced Stockton with 16 kills, while hitting .483. Junior setter Aubrey Rentzel had 23 assists and freshman defensive specialist Paige Anania notched 16 digs.
In addition to her 19 assists, Hassan added eight digs. Free finished with a team-high eight kills, while sophomore middle hitter/right side
Kaitlyn Parrish added five kills. Freshman defensive specialist/outside hitter
Ciera McCrae and junior middle hitter/outside hitter
Isabella Choice both added four kills.
McCrae led the team with 12 digs. A pair of defensive specialist/liberos, senior
Morgan Fox and freshman
Bella Craig, had seven and six digs, respectively.
Rutgers-Camden will play its final match of the regular season Thursday when it hosts John Jay College of Criminal Justice at 7 p.m. The Scarlet Raptors cancelled their scheduled tri-match at Wilkes University on Saturday due to health issues and hope to have players return in time for a first-round NJAC match Tuesday, when Rutgers-Camden hosts Montclair State University at 7 p.m.
