DAVENPORT, Florida. (March 16, 2022) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team exploded for 11 runs over the third and fourth innings here Wednesday and went on to defeat SUNY-Plattsburgh, 12-0, in a seven-inning spring break game.
The victory evens the Scarlet Raptors' record at 6-6, while the Cardinals fall to 5-6.
Junior right-hander
Dylan Wichrowski earned the victory with six innings of four-hit ball, walking one and striking out nine. He raised his record to 2-1. Junior
Ethan Carpenter completed the combination shutout with a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and one walk.
The Scarlet Raptors plated six runs in the third inning, aided by four hits, an error, a walk and a fielder's choice that didn't produce an out. Freshman right fielder
Frankie Romond opened the frame with a single and a stolen base. Junior second baseman
Danny Vazquez reached on a fielder's choice that didn't retire anyone and junior shortstop
Connor Van Dine loaded the bases with a bunt single. Junior catcher
Jake Guglielmi walked to force home the first run and junior first baseman
Jack Murphy picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that was misplayed with an infield throwing error.
Freshman third baseman
Andrew Brown added another RBI fielder's choice and stole second. Senior left fielder
Garrett Warner ripped a two-run single and stole second. He scored on a single by freshman center fielder
Chris Bonafiglia.
Leading, 6-0, the Scarlet Raptors added five hits in the fourth inning to produce five more runs. Vazquez reached on an error, went to second on a balk and advanced to third on a Guglielmi single. Murphy followed with his fourth home run of the season, a three-run bomb that made it a 9-0 game and knocked out Plattsburgh starter Sean Malamud.
Brown greeted reliever Logan Avin with a single, raced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Warner. Following a passed ball, senior designated hitter
R.J. McGettigan singled home another run.
The Raptors' final run in the seventh inning was sparked by a leadoff double from Bonafiglia, An error and an RBI fielder's choice by Van Dine.
Warner finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Murphy collected four RBIs, including three on his home run. Guglielmi, McGettigan and Bonafiglia collected two hits apiece in the Raptors' 14-hit attack.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Thursday morning in Davenport, Florida, facing Western New England
