KISSIMMEE, Florida (March 17, 2022) – A spring break trip to Florida has provided the Rutgers University-Camden softball team with as many rainouts as games.
The Scarlet Raptors saw a game against the University of Scranton rained out for the second time this week, giving Rutgers-Camden five rainouts. Fortunately for the Raptors, they were able to play their second scheduled game of the day and they rode the outstanding pitching of freshman
Lindsey Rodzon to a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine.
The game was the fifth for the Scarlet Raptors on their Florida trip, where they are 3-2. They are 3-4 overall on the season.
Rutgers-Camden concludes its spring break trip Friday with a pair of games in Leesburg, Florida. The Scarlet Raptors face Farmingdale State College and SUNY-Cortland.
Rutgers-Camden vs. Scranton
For the second time during their trip to Florida, the Scarlet Raptors saw a scheduled contest against the University of Scranton rained out. The two teams were supposed to play on Rutgers-Camden's first day in Florida, Saturday, March 12, but rainy weather washed through the Sunshine State. The contest was rescheduled for a mutual off day, Thursday, but once again the game was cancelled due to the field being under water.
Rutgers-Camden 2, Southern Maine 1
Rodzon hurled her second outstanding game of the spring trip, tossing an eight-hit complete game to earn her first collegiate victory. She walked one, struck out four and allowed just one earned run. Earlier in the week, Rodzon (1-1) lost a 1-0 complete game against FDU-Florham.
This time around, the Scarlet Raptors managed to get Rodzon just enough run support for her to win a pitching duel with Southern Maine sophomore Lauren Merrill (1-1). Merrill hurled a six-inning complete game, allowing five hits, one walk and two earned runs, while striking out two.
The Huskies (2-4) scored their lone run in the first inning on a pair of hits, including a two-out RBI triple by junior first baseman Rona Scott. Merrill made that run stand up until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Rutgers-Camden scored twice.
With one out in the sixth, senior shortstop
Meg Gray singled and was sacrificed to center. Junior designated player
Rachel White followed with a huge two-out single to center, advancing to second base on the throw when Gray scored the tying run. Sophomore first baseman
Zoe Rodriguez plated the eventual winning run with a single to center, scoring White.
The lone player in the game with multiple hits was junior center fielder Hannah Shields, who went 2-for-3 for the Huskies.
