FDU-Florham nine sweeps Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (March 5, 2022) – Fairleigh-Dickinson University-Florham junior catcher Chris Kubas hit a pair of home runs in the opening game and the Devils scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the nightcap as they swept a non-conference doubleheader against Rutgers-Camden here Saturday.

FDU-Florham won the opener, 9-4, and took the second game, 3-2.

The wins lift FDU-Florham to 6-2, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-4.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action on Tuesday when they host Wilson College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

FDU-Florham 9, Rutgers-Camden 4

The Devils scored five times in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a 3-3 tie and raise their record to 5-2. A Raptor error and a two-run home run by Kubas broke the tie. A single, an error and a three-run home run by senior right fielder Tyler McCulloch added the final three runs of the frame. The Devils added another run in the sixth on the second home run of the game by Kubas.

The two teams traded single runs over the first two innings, with the Devils scoring in the first inning on a home run by senior third baseman Tommy Moore. Rutgers-Camden evened the score in the top of the second following a leadoff double by senior shortstop Jesse Gerdes. With two outs he advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an infield single by senior first baseman R.J. McGettigan.

Moore had an RBI single in the third to put FDU ahead, but Raptor senior left fielder Garrett Warner drilled a solo home run to left field in the top of the fourth, tying the game at 2-2. It was the first home run of the season for Rutgers-Camden.

After doubles by junior first baseman Vincent Ferrigno and McCulloch helped the Devils regain the lead again in the bottom of the fourth, Rutgers-Camden once again answered. In the top of the fifth inning, freshman right fielder Frankie Romond collected his first collegiate hit with a leadoff bunt single. He advanced on a sacrifice by junior second baseman Danny Vazquez and scored on a double by junior third baseman Connor Van Dine.

Raptor junior starter Jack Murphy (1-1), who took the loss, added the final run for Rutgers-Camden with a solo home run in the seventh inning. On the mound, Murphy worked four innings and allowed five hits and five runs, four of them earned. He walked one and struck out four.

FDU-Florham 3, Rutgers-Camden 2

The second game was a pitching duel between two right-handed hurlers with similar last names, Rutgers-Camden junior John Kasper and FDU-Florham fifth-year pitcher Joseph Kastner. Through the first three innings, the lone hit was a second-inning single by FDU-Florham center fielder Matt Nodoro.

In the top of the fourth inning, however, Gerdes drew a leadoff walk for the Raptors and Murphy followed with a two-run home run for Rutgers-Camden's first hit. Three hits and an error plated an unearned run and cut the Raptors' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Moore singled, advanced on a ground out and scored on a two-out single by Nodoro. A two-out error kept the inning alive and sophomore second baseman Dylan Hode hit an RBI single to plate the go-ahead unearned run.

Kasper (1-1) worked 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) and nine hits. He walked one and struck out five. Kastner (2-0) picked up the win for the Devils, working six innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and five walks. He struck out five. Freshman Colby Craig earned his second save with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Nodoro went 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI for FDU-Florham.
