Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's basketball team built a 35-24 halftime lead and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 69-50, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
The Gothic Knights snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the NJAC.
The Scarlet Raptors fell to 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
Rutgers-Camden leads the all-time series, 31-22, but has lost the last two head-to-head battles.
The Scarlet Raptors scored the first six points of the game, but the Gothic Knights forged back to tie the contest at 9-9. NJCU went ahead to stay, 11-9, on a layup by freshman forward
Bria Smith (Bayonne, NJ/St. Dominic Academy), and the Gothic Knights built their lead to 35-24 by halftime.
Rutgers-Camden managed to trim the margin to three points, 41-38, in the second half on a three-pointer by junior guard
Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ/Audubon), but NJCU followed with an 18-3 run to put the game away.
Junior guard
Jade Medley (Queens, NY/Hudson Catholic) scored 12 points in the opening half to spark the Gothic Knights to their lead, and she finished with a game-high 18 points, while adding four assists. Junior guard
Ashley Vazquez (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) notched 16 points for the Gothic Knights, while Smith had a team-high eight rebounds and added seven points, four assists and three steals. She also collected the Gothic Knights' lone blocked shot.
Gravinese paced Rutgers-Camden with 16 points, while junior center/forward
Tanjae Lewis (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) added 13. Gravinese also added a team-high four assists.
Sophomore forward
Michelle Onu (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) had a game-high 14 rebounds and barely missed her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with nine points. Onu also tied her career high with five blocked shots, a mark she set against the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Dec. 20, 2013.
Junior guard/forward
Irene Grimanis (Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) hauled down 10 rebounds for the Raptors, helping Rutgers-Camden to a 41-36 advantage off the boards.
NJCU shot 45.8 percent from the floor (27-for-59), including 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from three-point range. Rutgers-Camden shot 28.6 percent (16-for-56) from the floor, but was 5-for-11 (45.5) from three-point range.
The two teams return to NJAC action with 1 p.m. games on Saturday. Rutgers-Camden hosts William Paterson University and NJCU travels to The College of New Jersey.
