Lewis' big second half sparks Rutgers-Camden

Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 20, 2014) – Junior center/forward Tanjae Lewis (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) notched 18 points and nine rebounds in the second half on her way to a career-high 20 points to lead the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team over John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 63-55, in a non-conference game here Monday afternoon on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Scarlet Raptors improve to 4-10 overall, including 4-1 against non-conference opponents.

The Bloodhounds fall to 5-11.

After John Jay scored the first field goal of the second half to lengthen its halftime edge to 21-17, Lewis took over in the scoring column as well as off the boards. She scored 10 of the Raptors' next 13 points, giving Rutgers-Camden a 30-25 advantage, including a pair of foul shots to make it a 27-25 game as Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good.

Her team-high 20 points passed her previous Raptor career high of 18, set on Nov. 26 against Rowan University. She also grabbed all nine of her rebounds in the second half, including five off the defensive glass.

After building their 30-25 lead, the Raptors received back-to-back treys from sophomore Falecia Galindez (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) and Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) to build the first double-digit lead of the day (36-25).

Although the Bloodhounds trimmed the margin to four points (48-44) with 3:10 remaining on a five-point run by junior guard Tyana Hale (Brooklyn, NY/Abraham Lincoln) – a three-pointer sandwiched between a pair of free throws – the Raptors quickly recovered on a layup by Lewis, a trey by Gravinese and a pair of foul shots by sophomore forward Michelle Onu (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). That made the score 55-44 and the Bloodhounds never came closer than eight points the rest of the way.

In addition to the 20 points by Lewis, Gravinese finished with 15 points and Galindez added 14 for the Scarlet Raptors. Junior guard/forward Irene Grimanis (Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester), meanwhile, had a game-high 13 rebounds as Rutgers-Camden held a 50-47 edge off the boards. The 13 boards were two shy of her career high.

Onu added 10 rebounds, while Lewis and Gravinese each had nine, with Gravinese's total setting a career high.

Grimanis added a game-high six assists to break her previous career high of five, set against Rowan on Nov. 28, 2012. Galindez added three assists.

John Jay received a game-high 22 points from Hale, while senior forward Jamecia Forsythe (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) added 16. Hale also had 12 rebounds to complete a double-double.

Rutgers-Camden shot 18-for-58 (31.0 percent) from the floor, while John Jay shot 21-for-67 (31.3). The Raptors, however, were 7-for-16 (43.8) from three-point range compared to the Bloodhounds' 3-for-11 (27.3) and also outscored John Jay by 10 points at the foul line. Rutgers-Camden shot 20-for-34 (58.8) from the charity stripe and John Jay shot 10-for-18 (55.6).

Both teams return to conference action Wednesday. The Bloodhounds play a 12 p.m. CUNYAC game at The City College of New York, while the Scarlet Raptors face New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Rutgers-Newark on the road at 6 p.m.
