Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Ramapo College women's basketball team went on an eight-point run late in the game, overcoming a one-point deficit and lifting the Roadrunners over Rutgers University-Camden, 68-60, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
Ramapo, which has won its last five games against Rutgers-Camden, improves to 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raptors, who lead the all-time series against Ramapo, 31-21, fall to 4-12 overall and 0-11 in the NJAC.
Trailing, 49-48, the Roadrunners took the lead for good on a pair of foul shots with 7:01 remaining by senior guard
Alayna Donadio (Wantage, NJ/High Point). Moments later, Donadio scored on a layup and Ramapo went on to open up a 57-49 advantage.
Rutgers-Camden followed with an 8-1 run, however, cutting its deficit to 58-57 on a pair of foul shots by junior center
Tanjae Lewis (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) with 2:21 remaining. Donadio, however, responded with a layup to spark a six-point Roadrunner run for a 64-58 lead and the closest the Raptors came after that was 64-59.
After the Roadrunners notched the first field goal of the game, the Scarlet Raptors opened up an 8-4 lead before Ramapo rattled off 13 straight points, sparked by back-to-back three-point plays by junior guard
Kerrie Kosakowski (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), who was fouled twice on field goals and tacked on the free throw both times.
Kosakowski's second three-point play gave Ramapo a 10-8 lead with 9:19 left in the half and the Roadrunners increased the margin to 17-8 before Rutgers-Camden battled back. The Scarlet Raptors scored the last five points of the half – four coming on a three-pointer and foul shot by junior guard
Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) – to cut the deficit to 25-23 at the break.
Kosakowski and senior forward
Micaela Moore (Lindenwold, NJ/Lindenwold) had six points apiece for Ramapo in the opening half, while Gravinese had seven to lead the Scarlet Raptors.
In a game that featured 11 ties, and had 10 lead changes in the second half, junior guard
Jackie Jerkovich (Secaucus, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) scored 13 of her team-high 17 points after halftime for the Roadrunners. Jerkovich tied for game-high scoring honors with the Scarlet Raptors' Lewis and Gravinese, who also notched 17 points apiece.
Ramapo received 13 points from Donadio, while Moore and junior guard
Kelly Haspel (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) both added 11. Moore also had a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high six steals, while Haspel and Donadio tied for game-high honors with four assists apiece. Haspel also added five steals.
In addition to her 17 points, Lewis added 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Sophomore forward
Michelle Onu (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), meanwhile, collected nine points and hauled down a game-high 19 rebounds for the Scarlet Raptors, one shy of her career rebounding high.
Junior guard/forward
Irene Grimanis (Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) added 10 rebounds as the Scarlet Raptors held a commanding 56-29 advantage off the boards. Rutgers-Camden, however, made 23 turnovers and shot only 18-for-62 (29.0 percent) from the floor, while Ramapo shot 39.2 percent (20-for-51) and committed only two turnovers.
The Roadrunners hit 25 of their 33 foul shots (75.8), while Rutgers-Camden went 20-for-28 (71.4) from the foul line.
Both teams return to NJAC action Wednesday night. Ramapo hosts Kean University at 5:30 p.m., while Rutgers-Camden plays an 8 p.m. game at Rowan University.
