Gordon, Howard, Marshall help Newark top Camden

Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – Junior forward Sharee Gordon (Newark, NJ/University) notched 17 points, junior forward Jade Howard (Sicklerville, NJ/St. Joseph's-Hammonton) had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard ShaQuanna Marshall (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) added 15 points to power the Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team over Rutgers-Camden, 71-52, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Monday afternoon.

The Scarlet Raiders improve to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the NJAC.

The Scarlet Raptors fall to 2-6 and 0-5.

Rutgers-Newark scored the first 10 points of the game before Rutgers-Camden forged back to tie the game at 18-18 on a foul shot by senior center Tina Croxton (Deptford, NJ/Deptford). The Scarlet Raiders, however, notched the next seven points to regain their lead, sparked by a pair of free throws from freshman guard Shala Glenn (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway).

Marshall had nine first-half points for the Scarlet Raiders, while Glenn added eight of points.

For Rutgers-Camden, junior guard Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) had 14 points in the opening half, including 4-for-5 shooting from three-point range. Junior guard Monica Burch (Lawnside, NJ/Sterling) added eight points in the first half.

With Newark clinging to a 56-50 lead, a three-point attempt by Gravinese went halfway down the basket before kicking out, and the Scarlet Raiders came down and hit a trey by sophomore guard Arianna Williams (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) for a six-point swing. That trey by Williams sparked a 15-2 Newark run to end the game.

In addition to double figures in scoring from Gordon, Howard and Marshall, the Scarlet Raiders received nine points from senior forward Jasmine Daniels (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) and eight from Glenn.

Marshall and junior guard Courtney Woodard (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) both had four assists for Newark, while Howard added a game-high four steals.

Newark held a 46-38 advantage off the boards and shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor, while Camden shot 31.5 percent (17-for-54).

Gravinese finished with a game-high 18 points, setting her Rutgers-Camden career high. Her previous high was 17 points, coming against both New Jersey City University (Jan. 9, 2013) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Dec. 20, 2013).

Burch added 10 points for the Scarlet Raiders, while dishing out a game-high six assists.

Sophomore forward Michelle Onu (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) tied Howard for game-high honors with 11 rebounds.

Both teams will play 6 p.m. NJAC contests on Wednesday. Rutgers-Newark hosts Ramapo College, while Rutgers-Camden travels to Richard Stockton College.
