King's tops Raptors in Neumann consolation game

ASTON, Penn. –King's College sophomore forward Kayla Feairheller (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds left in the first half to break a tie score and the Monarchs led the rest of the way as they defeated the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team, 79-68, in the consolation game of the Neumann University Tip-Off Tournament here Sunday afternoon.
 
The loss drops the Raptors to 0-2, while the Monarchs even their record at 1-1.
 
In the championship game, host Neumann defeated Wesley College, 59-49.
 
After trailing most of the first half, the Scarlet Raptors fought back to take their first lead of the game, 27-25, on a jumper  by freshman guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) with 4:21 left in the half. They padded their lead to 29-25, their biggest lead of the night, on a layup by senior guard/forward Irene Grimanis (Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) before King's rattled off six straight points.
 
A jumper by junior guard Krystle Cook (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) tied the game at 31-31 before King's took the lead for good on the three-pointer by Feairheller, making it a 34-31 game at halftime. The closest the Raptors came in the second half was one point, when senior center/forward Tanjae Lewis (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) started the half with a layup.
 
Lewis, who had a double-double in her season-opening game against Neumann, notched 12 points and added five rebounds on her way to earning a spot on the all-tournament team.
 
Freshman forward/center Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) scored 18 points and added six rebounds for the Scarlet Raptors, while Racobaldo collected a double-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds and a game-high six assists.
 
Grimanis grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds for the Raptors and contributed six points, while senior guard Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) notched 11 points.
 
King's College received a game-high 19 points from all-tournament team member Marissa Manning (Newtown Square, PA/Cardinal O'Hara). The senior forward also added 11 rebounds for a double-double.
 
Feairheller scored 17 points, junior forward Tara Zdancewicz (Larksville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) scored 15 and sophomore guard Kasey Seitz (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) added 14 for the Monarchs.
 
King's shot 40 percent (24-for-60) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden shot 36.7 percent (29-for-79). The Scarlet Raptors held a commanding 58-39 advantage off the boards, but also made seven more turnovers (18-11).
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. game at Bryn Mawr College.
