NJCU run sinks Rutgers-Camden

Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's basketball team went on a 17-6 run to open the second half, wiping out an eight-point halftime deficit, and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 73-55, in the final game of the season for both New Jersey Athletic Conference teams here Wednesday night.

NJCU ends its season at 9-16 overall and 6-12 in the NJAC, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Rutgers-Camden closes at 5-19 overall and 0-18 in the NJAC.

NJCU swept the season series, but Rutgers-Camden leads the all-time series, 31-23.

Prior to the game the Scarlet Raptors celebrated Senior Night and honored the careers of departing center Tina Croxton (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) and guard Danielle Hooks (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield), who earned four and two letters with the program, respectively.

Croxton, Hooks and the Scarlet Raptors opened up a lead as large as 11 points in the first half (35-24) before settling with a 35-27 halftime lead. Junior guard Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) notched eight points, sophomore guard Falecia Galindez (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) collected seven and both Croxton and junior center/forward Tanjae Lewis (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) added six in the opening half. Croxton also grabbed six first-half rebounds, while Gravinese had five assists at the break.

For the Gothic Knights, freshman forward Bria Smith (Bayonne, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) had 10 points at the break, while junior guard Jade Medley (Queens, NY/Hudson Catholic) added eight and sophomore guard Kiana Briggs (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) chipped in with six.

The second half turned into the Medley and Smith show for the Gothic Knights, as Medley scored 12 points and Smith added 11 to help NJCU turn the game around. Smith scored 11 of the Gothic Knights' first 15 points of the second half as NJCU surged to a quick 15-6 run, taking the lead for good, 42-41, on a layup by Smith with 12:33 left in the game. Junior guard Ashley Vazquez (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) tacked on a jumper to complete the 17-6 run to open the second half, giving her four points out of the six not scored by Smith.

The Scarlet Raptors never came closer than 44-43 the rest of the way, thanks to Medley, who went 3-for-4 from the floor – including a trey – and 5-for-5 from the foul line in the final 20 minutes.

Smith finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, while adding three assists, three steals and two blocks. Medley finished with 20 points, three blocks and three steals.

Briggs added 14 points for the Gothic Knights – eight in the second half – and also contributed six boards and three assists, while Vazquez finished with seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.


Rutgers-Camden received 14 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Michelle Onu (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), while Lewis canned 10 points. Gravinese finished with eight points and a game-high six assists. She tied her career high in assists that was accomplished twice previously, most recently on Monday night at the College of Staten Island.

Gravinese also collected two treys on the night to finish with 66 for the season, tying the program mark set by Megan Crank during the 1994-95 season.

Sophomore guard Krystle Cook (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) also scored eight points, while Galindez canned seven and Croxton closed her career with six points, seven rebounds and two steals. Junior guard/forward Irene Grimanis (Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) added a team-high nine rebounds for the Raptors.

It was Croxton's 998th career game, tying her for fifth on the program's all-time list with Crank (1992-96). She also finished sixth on the career list with 124 blocked shots.

NJCU shot 37.9 percent from the floor (25-for-66) and 20-for-26 (76.9) from the foul line, while holding a 46-45 edge off the boards. Rutgers-Camden shot 32.3 percent from the floor (21-for-65) and 8-for-13 from the foul line (61.5).

The Scarlet Raptors finished with 17 turnovers, including 10 in the second half.
