Box Score UNION, N.J. – The Kean University women's basketball team scored the last 16 points of the first half and forced 34 turnovers in the game as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 81-53, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars improve to 12-9 overall and 9-5 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 4-15 and 0-14.
Kean holds a 43-18 lead in the all-time series and has won 17 of the last 18 games between the teams, including a 69-53 decision in Camden on Jan. 11 in the first meeting of the teams this season.
After falling into an 11-4 hole early in the game, the Scarlet Raptors went on a 16-4 run to grab a 20-15 advantage with 7:10 left in the half. Junior center/forward
Tanjae Lewis (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) had five points in the run, while sophomore guard
Krystle Cook (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) and sophomore forward
Michelle Onu (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) both added four points.
Kean, however, scored the final 16 points of the half to take a 31-20 lead at the break. The Cougars took the lead for good, 22-20, on a field goal by junior guard
Shay Collins (Pine Hill, NJ/Atlantic City).
The Cougars led by as many as 31 points (80-49) in the second half as they outscored the Scarlet Raptors, 50-33, in the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore guard/forward
Jazmine Davis (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) paced four Kean players in double figures with 19 points.
Freshman guard
Jaquetta Owens (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) and freshman guard/forward
Kenya Adams (Jersey City, NJ/Perth Amboy) both scored 15 points, while Collins added 10. Owens also dished out a game-high eight assists, while Davis had a game-high seven steals.
For the Scarlet Raptors, Onu collected her sixth double-double of the season, notching 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Her 13 boards hiked her career total over 300 to 303.
Lewis added 10 points and six boards, while junior guard
Alex Gravinese (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) scored nine points and sophomore guard
Falecia Galindez (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) netted eight.
Senior center
Tina Croxton (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) collected five rebounds and five points, and added the Scarlet Raptors' lone blocked shot to give her 120 for her career, moving her alone into sixth place on the all-time list. She broke a tie with Quan Luck (1997-2001).
The Scarlet Raptors travel to Ewing Monday night to play The College of New Jersey in a 6 p.m. NJAC makeup game.
