CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team won the battles on the court, but the short-handed Scarlet Raptors lost the match in their season opener here Tuesday.
Christine AbacanWith only four players available before the team adds two incoming athletes, the Scarlet Raptors lost three matches by default. That proved enough to hand the Cavaliers a 5-4 decision in the opener for both teams. Rutgers-Camden, which went 4-2 in action on the court, lost by default at No. 3 doubles and both No. 5 and 6 singles.
Senior
Amanda Hickman (Millville, NJ/Millville) and sophomore
Angela Errigo (Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) were double winners for the Scarlet Raptors. They both won their singles matches and combined to win at first doubles over their Cabrini opponents, 8-1.
Hickman posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at first singles and Errigo captured a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles. The victories increased Hickman's program career records to 38 singles wins and 29 doubles wins.
Rutgers-Camden also picked up a win at third singles as junior
Christine Abacan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) won when her Cabrini opponent retired. Abacan and freshman
Ina San Buenaventura (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) lost at second doubles, 8-0. San Buenaventura, making her collegiate debut, also dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision at fourth singles.
Rutgers-Camden, in its first season under new Head Coach
Casey McCullough, looks to have two more players cleared and on the roster by Thursday, when it hosts Cedar Crest College at 3:30 p.m.
