GLASSBORO, N.J. (Oct. 12, 2016) – One week after knocking off a Top 5 team, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team tried for a repeat performance here Wednesday night. Rowan University, however, scored a goal in the 64th minute to break a 1-1 tie and the Profs went on to edge the Scarlet Raptors, 2-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
Rowan, ranked third nationally in both the NSCAA Division III and the
D3soccer.com Top 25 polls, improves to 12-0-1 overall and a conference-leading 5-0-1 with its third straight victory. Rutgers-Camden, which topped No. 5 Haverford by a 1-0 score on the road the previous Wednesday, falls to 7-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the NJAC.
The victory was only the second in the last nine games for Rowan against Rutgers-Camden, but the Profs hold a 37-11-3 lead in the all-time series.
Rowan didn't take long to jump on the scoreboard, as sophomore forward
Shane Doherty (Delran, NJ/Delran) finished a feed from senior forward
Vinny Ignatowicz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), which was deflected on the way by sophomore back
Will Sjaastad (Allentown, NJ/Allentown). Doherty scored only 5:24 into the game.
Rutgers-Camden didn't take long to answer, tying the score only 1:14 later. Junior midfielder
Clayton Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) fed junior forward
Brad Maine (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic). Maine outran the Rowan defense and shot from the right side of the goal to notch his fourth tally of the season.
Rowan's winning goal came when the service by junior midfielder
Jake Conners (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was mishandled by Raptor sophomore keeper
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra), resulting in a goal at 63:11.
Brett faced plenty of pressure in the game as the Profs held a 21-4 advantage in shots and a 5-2 margin in corner kicks. Brett made nine saves, while Rowan sophomore keeper
Kyle Dennis (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) needed to make only one.
Rutgers-Camden plays another tough conference opponent on Saturday when it hosts Kean University at 1 p.m. The Cougars, who have received votes toward the
D3soccer.com Top 25 poll on several occasions this season, had three votes in the latest poll, released Tuesday.
