CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 12, 2016) – Rutgers University-Camden scored a pair of goals in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock and Drew University took a 2-0 first-half lead as both teams went on to post 3-1 victories here Saturday in the opening round of the ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championships.

Top-seeded Rutgers-Camden defeated No. 4 seed Hunter College, while second-seeded Drew eliminated third seed New York University.

Rutgers-Camden will face Drew Sunday in a quarterfinal game in Camden, beginning at 12 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals, which will be held Nov. 19 at a site to be determined.

Rutgers-Camden 3, Hunter 1

Hunter scored the game's first goal, but the Scarlet Raptors (9-8-4) received two goals from junior forward Shane Guyer (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton), a goal and an assist from freshman midfielder Patrick Grudnik (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) and two assists from junior midfielder Brad Maine (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) to rally for the victory.

Hunter (10-8-1) scored in the 18th minute when senior back Bryan Suertegaray (Port Chester, NY/Port Chester) headed home a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Jacob Gorodetsky (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Tech). It was his third goal of the season.

Rutgers-Camden tied the game two minutes later when Guyer finished off his fourth goal of the season, into the right side of the net, assisted by Maine.

With the score tied in the second half, both teams missed chances to take the lead. The Hawks' John Bautista (Bronx, NY/Computer and Technology) sent a shot wide right in a one-on-one with Scarlet Raptor sophomore goalie James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra). Later in the half, Raptor sophomore back Darnell Brown (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) hit a shot off the crossbar.

The Scarlet Raptors, who are now 12-0 in ECAC tournament play under 11th-year Head Coach Tim Oswald, including four titles, broke the tie in the 75th minute. Grudnik sent a pass to Guyer on the left side of the box and Guyer ripped a high shot to the opposite side for his fifth goal of the year and second game-winning goal.

With Hunter pressing to get the tying goal in the last minute, Maine started a 2-on-1 breakaway, carrying the ball up the middle of the field before dishing it off at the top of the box for Grudnik, who scored his second goal of the season. It was the team-leading sixth assist for Maine.

Hunter finished with a 20-17 advantage in shots, mainly due to an 11-4 advantage in the opening half, when the Hawks also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Hunter finished with an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.

Brett collected eight saves for the Scarlet Raptors. Freshman Paul Alain Yovoh Tenfoung (Yaounde, Cameroon/Nkol-Eton) had three saves for the Hawks, who also were aided by a backsave.

Drew 3, NYU 1

Drew University (11-5-3) survived early pressure by New York University (9-8-2) and went on to advance with a 3-1 victory, despite playing the entire second half a man down due to a late first-half ejection.

The Rangers received first-half goals from sophomore midfielder Anthony McMyne (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and senior midfielder Ian Pavlak (Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt) before padding their lead on a goal midway through the second half by senior midfielder Dylan Hammer (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury).

The Violets scored with 32 seconds remaining when senior midfielder Bryan Walsh (Hazlet, NJ/St. John Vianney) tucked a shot inside the right post, assisted by sophomore midfielder Ricardo Mitrano (Maracaibo, Venezuela/Cypress Bay).

McMyne's fourth goal of the season put the Rangers on top to stay at 26:10 after a series of passes from Marlon Rodriguez (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) to Benjamin Audi (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) on the left side and a ball by Audi across the goal area. It was flicked to the far post by freshman forward Andy Imoh (Sugar Land, TX/William B. Travis) before McMyne finished off the play.

The Rangers added another goal only 3:05 before halftime when a free kick into the box by sophomore forward Alexi Velazquez (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) was tapped in by Pavlak for his first goal of the season.

NYU nearly got a goal back in the 47th minute, but a shot by senior midfielder Petter Aasa (Umea, Sweden/Shattuck St. Mary's, MN) was denied on a backsave. With 16 minutes remaining in the game, a shot by Aasa went off the crossbar after Drew had taken a 3-0 lead on Hammer's goal. He scored off an assist by senior midfielder Joe Sollod (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central).

Drew finished with a 17-15 edge in shots and a 3-2 lead in corner kicks. Freshman goalie Jason Adamo (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) earned his first collegiate win with six saves, while coming within 32 seconds of a shutout.

For NYU, senior goalie Lucas Doucette (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines) collected eight saves.
