GALLOWAY, N.J. (Dec. 7, 2016) – Just when the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team had rallied to take the lead after a 10-point second-half deficit, Stockton University answered the challenge here Wednesday night.
The Ospreys went on a 24-4 run, sparked by junior guard
Lea Mendolla (Nutley, NJ/Mount St. Dominic) after the Scarlet Raptors took their last lead at 42-41, and Stockton went on to post a 67-52 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
Stockton, which received six votes toward the
D3hoops.com Top 25 poll this week after being ranked No. 23 last week, improves to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference, snapping a two-game winning streak.
Stockton has won 28 of its last 29 games against Rutgers-Camden, with the Raptors' lone victory in that stretch coming last season in Camden on Feb. 3 by a 59-44 score. The Ospreys lead the all-time series, 58-19.
In a tight first half, the teams traded leads three times and were tied on five occasions, with the last coming at 22-22 following a jumper by Raptor freshman guard
Fatimah Williams (Camden, NJ/Timber Creek). Stockton answered by scoring the last six points of the half to give the Ospreys a 28-22 lead, with four of those six points produced by Mendolla.
At the half, Mendolla and junior forward
Najha Treadwell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) had eight points apiece, while senior guard
Taylor Christina (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea) had seven for Stockton. Treadwell also had seven rebounds, while junior forward
Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had four blocked shots.
Rutgers-Camden received five first-half points from both Williams and sophomore guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell).
The Ospreys opened up a 39-29 lead midway through the third quarter before the Scarlet Raptors came roaring back with a nine-point run, cutting the deficit to 39-38. Moments later, a jumper by the Raptors' Williams gave Rutgers-Camden the lead at 42-41. That margin proved short-lived, as Mendolla notched the final five points of the third quarter, restoring Stockton's lead for good, and sparking the Ospreys on their decisive run.
Mendolla finished with 17 points and five steals for the Ospreys. Williams and Treadwell both had double-doubles, with Williams scoring 13 points and collecting 10 rebounds. She barely missed a
triple-double, finishing with eight blocked shots. Treadwell, meanwhile, had 10 points and 10 boards, while Christina finished with 10 points and almost added a third double-double, finishing with eight rebounds.
Rutgers-Camden received 17 points and seven rebounds from
Fatimah Williams, while junior center/forward
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) had nine points and nine rebounds.
Junior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) notched team-high totals of five assists and four steals, while adding six points and five rebounds. Senior center
Caroline Santiago (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) tied Obasi with a team-high nine boards.
The Raptors shot only 21-for-80 (26.3 percent) from the floor, including 4-for-23 (17.4) from three-point range. The Ospreys shot 25-for-64 (39.1) from the floor.
Rutgers-Camden plays a non-conference home game on Monday when it hosts Baruch College at 7 p.m.
