Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 15, 2016) – Senior righty
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) picked up a win in relief in the first game and was perfect in the second game as the Rutgers University-Camden softball team swept a pair of games here Tuesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
In their first contest of the day, the Raptors beat Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, NY), 11-3, in a game shortened to six innings by the eight-run rule. The second game was called after five innings by the eight-run rule as Scott threw the sixth perfect game in program history in the Raptors' 17-0 win over Southern Vermont College (Bennington, VT).
Rutgers-Camden, which improved to 3-4, returns to action Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Scarlet Raptors face Spalding University (Louisville, Kentucky) at 9:30 a.m. and play Albertus Magnus College (New Haven, Connecticut) at 1:30 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden 11, Sarah Lawrence 3 (6 innings)
After falling behind, 3-0, through three innings, the Scarlet Raptors roared back with three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, sandwiched around a five-run fifth, to win the game by the eight-run rule.
The Scarlet Raptors tied the game in the fourth inning following a leadoff single by freshman catcher
Charlee Greco (Shamong, NJ/Seneca). One out later she scored on a double down the left field line by senior shortstop
Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran). A double by freshman designated player
Lauren Glaze (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and a outfield throwing error scored Larson and sent Glaze to third. She scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly to center by sophomore third baseman
Mackenzie Mason (Penns Grove, NJ/Penns Grove). The Raptors took the lead for good in the fifth, sparked by a leadoff triple from senior
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional), who started the game at first base and picked up the victory when she relieved starter
Abby Merryman (Washington Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Scott scored the eventual winning run on a single by Greco. Senior center fielder
Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) drew a walk and two outs later, Mason singled home a run. On a walk to junior right fielder
Megan Goodspeed (Florence, NJ/Florence), the fourth ball was a wild pitch, plating both Day and Mason. Freshman pinch-hitter
Dannie Dinsfriend (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) added an RBI double, scoring Goodspeed.
The Raptors wrapped up their eight-run margin in the sixth on three hits and an error Larson had a two-run single in the frame and Mason ended the contest with an RBI single up the middle.
Larson went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead the Raptors' 13-hit attack. Mason went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs, including the game-ending RBI. Greco, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs. Her single sparked the game-tying rally in the fourth and another hit put the Raptors ahead to stay in the fifth.
Scott (2-2) picked up the win with three innings of two-hit shutout ball.
Rutgers-Camden 17, Southern Vermont 0 (5 innings)
Scott threw the first perfect game at Rutgers-Camden since her current head coach,
Michelle Schlichtig, beat New Jersey City, 11-0, in five innings in the opening game of a doubleheader on April 26, 2006. The game marked the first no-hitter for the Raptors since
Samantha Sandridge (three innings) and
Brittany Striewski (two innings) combined to beat York (NY) College, 24-1, on March 20, 2015.
Scott's no-hitter was the 23rd overall in program history and her second no-hitter at Rutgers-Camden. The first came in the opener of a doubleheader against John Jay College on March 11, 2014, with the Raptors winning, 6-0.
Scott struck out nine of the Mountaineers' 15 batters, including the side in the third inning. She ended her perfecto with a swinging strikeout. By that time, the Scarlet Raptors had pounded out 10 hits and taken advantage of 11 walks and two errors against Southern Vermont pitcher
Nicole Matthews (Pittstown, NY/Tamarac). The Raptors put the game away early, scoring nine times in the opening inning, aided by doubles from Day (one RBI) and Mason (two RBIs) and capped by a two-out pop fly single by Scott that cleared the bases.
Rutgers-Camden added two more runs in the second inning without the benefit of a hit, and capped the game with a four-run fourth inning. That frame was highlighted by a three-run pinch-hit triple by junior
Abby Merryman (Washington Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and a two-run single by Mason. Mason went 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs to lead the offense, while adding 10 putouts as the Raptors' catcher.
Scott went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Merryman was 1-for-1 with her three-run triple.
