IMMACULATA, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2016) – The start of the Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis season was delayed for nine days due to several postponements, but the 2016 team finally opened its season here Saturday.
The young and rebuilding Scarlet Raptors, who feature only two letterwinners from last year's team and were without one of them for their opener, dropped an 8-1 decision against undefeated Immaculata University (3-0). Last season, the Scarlet Raptors dropped an 8-1 decision against Immaculata in Camden on Oct. 10.
Five of the six Scarlet Raptors made their Rutgers-Camden debut, and freshman
Annalise Kipp (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) won her first collegiate match with a marathon 0-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory at first singles.
Freshman
Danielle Lemma (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at second singles, and also teamed with
Annalise Kipp at first doubles, where Immaculata won, 8-2.
Immaculata also posted victories at third singles over sophomore
Ashley Flores (Camden, NJ/Moorestown Friends) by a 6-2, 6-0 count and at fourth singles over senior
Millie Kipp (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), 6-1, 6-0. Freshman
Trinh Nguyen (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) and sophomore
Bryana Foxx-Parham (Richmond, VA/Armstrong) lost at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Flores and
Millie Kipp lost at second doubles, 8-0, and Nguyen and Foxx-Parham lost 8-1 at third doubles.
Foxx-Parham, who joined the team midway through last season, was the only player with collegiate tennis experience entering the match.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday when it plays its home opener. The Raptors host perennial New Jersey Athletic Conference champion The College of New Jersey in a 3:30 p.m. conference match. The Lions have won all 33 NJAC titles since the inception of women's tennis as an NJAC sport in 1982. No championship was held in 1995.
