Box Score
RADNOR, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2016) – Junior midfielder
Sean Welch (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) picked the perfect time for his first collegiate goal.
Welch scored 4:41 into the second overtime period here Wednesday night to lift the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team over Cabrini University, 1-0, in a non-conference game. The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 3-0-2, while the Cavaliers fall to 2-3.
With time winding down and the game seemingly headed for a scoreless tie, Cabrini turned the ball over in the midfield and sophomore
Eric Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) sent a through ball to Welch in the box. Welch's high shot under the crossbar ended a night in which the Scarlet Raptors outshot the Cavaliers, 17-11, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Rutgers-Camden also held an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks, while forcing Cabrini keeper CJ Serratore to make five saves, including four in the opening half.
The game ended in a similar manner to last year's contest between the clubs, when Rutgers-Camden edged Cabrini, 1-0, in the first overtime period. That game was held in Camden on Sept. 16.
Sophomore keeper
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made two saves to collect his second shutout of the season and the eighth of his young career. While working the entire 104:41 minutes, Brett passed the 2,500 minute mark in his Raptor career, the minimum number of minutes required by a goalie to qualify for NCAA career statistics. In his 2,557:47 career minutes, he owns a career goals-against average to 0.99, which currently ranks as the third-best mark in program history.
Welch's game-winning shot was one of his two shots during the game and the lone one on goal. Junior forward
Aaron Muse (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) had four of the Raptors' shots, while freshman midfielder
Sean Heins (Medford, NJ/Seneca) and junior back
Steve Karakitsios (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) both added three. Heins and Muse both had two shots on goal that were saved by Serratore.
Rutgers-Camden opens its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule Saturday when it hosts Rutgers-Newark at 1 p.m.
