CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 17, 2016) – A strong team from Rutgers University-Newark came into its New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer opener here Saturday receiving votes toward the
D3soccer.com Top 25 poll and looking to end its streak of frustration at the hands of Rutgers-Camden.
Junior midfielder
Brad Maine (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and his Scarlet Raptor teammates had other ideas.
Maine notched two goals and added one assist to lead Rutgers-Camden over Rutgers-Newark, 3-0, in a battle of NJAC rivals and sister schools. The victory marked the eighth straight time the Scarlet Raptors have defeated the Scarlet Raiders, dating back to their last loss in 2012.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 4-0-2 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Newark, which received 72 votes in the latest
D3soccer.com poll to make them the 29th-ranked Division III team, falls to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Both teams had an excellent opportunity in the opening half, although Newark had more chances in out-shooting Camden, 7-2. In the 14th minute, the Raptors' junior forward
Aaron Muse (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) had a strong header that was denied by Newark keeper Andres Medina. Four minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders' Breno Lustosa hit a shot off the crossbar, the first of two times he hit the crossbar in the game. He also hit one off the crossbar 1:37 into the second half.
Rutgers-Camden finally broke the deadlock when Maine scored off a throw-in by sophomore midfielder
Eric Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep). The quick throw-in from the left side and a head flick by Muse into the box caught the Raiders napping, and Maine chipped in his first goal of the season at the 54:22 mark.
Maine struck again at 62:50, taking a feed from Muse in the box and notching an insurance goal. He finished his big game at 89:22 when his square ball in the midfield sprung junior
Shane Guyer (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) in on the goal, where Guyer's shot under the crossbar produced his second tally of the season.
Newark finished with a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Rutgers-Camden sophomore keeper
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made seven saves to earn his third shutout of the season. Medina had five saves for the Scarlet Raiders.
Rutgers-Camden plays a 7 p.m. non-conference game Tuesday at Misericordia University.
