Staten Island edges Rutgers-Camden women's tennis team, 5-4

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team played its second match in two days here Sunday and the Scarlet Raptors were edged by a red-hot College of Staten Island team, 5-4.

The Dolphins, who have won four straight matches, improve to 7-2. Rutgers-Camden, which posted a 9-0 win over Cedar Crest in a home match Saturday, falls to 3-5.

The Scarlet Raptors split their six singles matches, but won only one of the three doubles matches as they saw their two-match winning streak come to an end.

Freshmen Jenna O'Lexy (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and Lexi Sample (Newfield, NJ/Delsea Regional), playing their first collegiate match at the first doubles spot, posted an 8-3 victory. The Scarlet Raptors dropped a pair of narrow 8-6 decisions at the next two doubles spots, however, with sophomore Danielle Lemma (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) and freshman Anna Archut (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) combining at second doubles and freshman Abby Banner (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) and sophomore Trinh Nguyen (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) teaming to form the third doubles combination.

O'Lexy won her first collegiate match playing at first singles when Staten Island's Viktoriya Volkova retired, down 5-0. The victories in doubles and singles gave O'Lexy four wins over the two days this weekend. On Saturday, she posted victories at second doubles and second singles. O'Lexy, pictured above, hiked her collegiate marks to 4-4 in both singles and doubles play with her weekend success.

Lemma dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 2 singles spot before the two teams split the final four singles matches.

Sample posted a 6-4, 6-3 decision at third singles and Banner won, 6-0, 6-3, at fourth singles. At fifth singles, the Dolphins' Hannah Bruschi edged Archut, 7-6, in the opening set and posted a 6-2 win to close out their match. At sixth singles, the Raptors' freshman Christina Lee (West Deptford, NJ/Gloucester County Institute of Technology) dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision.

Rutgers-Camden closes out its season with three matches next weekend, beginning with a makeup match at Stockton University Friday at 5 p.m. The Raptors play at Kean University Saturday (1 p.m.) and host Penn State-Brandywine in a makeup match Sunday at 12 p.m.
