WILKES-BARRE, Penn. (Oct. 28, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden volleyball team split a set of matches today, as they traveled to Wilkes University as they took on the host Colonels and Utica College.
Rutgers-Camden 1, Wilkes 3
In the first match of the day, the Scarlet Raptors battled through 4 sets and eventually dropped the contest to Wilkes, by a final score of 3-1. It was a rematch of a battle from September 23, when Wilkes traveled to Camden for the Scarlet Raptors' Homecoming. Action on that day saw Rutgers-Camden battle back from a 0-2 set deficit and win the match 3-2.
The opening 2 sets saw Wilkes capture both by scores of 25-22 and 25-20, before Rutgers-Camden bounced back and cut the lead in half by winning the third set by a score of 25-17. A fourth and final close set saw the Colonels close out the match by a score of 25-22.
Senior
Cortnee Wilkerson (Los Angeles, CA, West Adams Prep) led the Scarlet Raptors in 3 categories in the opening match, including kills (16), aces (3), and digs (16). Sophomore
Jordan Erskine (Barnegat, NJ, Barnegat) provided 11 kills and a team-high 3 blocks. Sophomore
Caitlynn Marcano (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) led Rutgers-Camden in assists, dishing out a team-high 21. Freshman
Alyson Lowe (Havertown, PA, Haverford) also provided 15.
Sophomore
Natalie DiGiacomo (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) added 13 digs for Rutgers-Camden's defensive efforts, and junior
Myiah Gatling (Woolwich Township, NJ, Kingsway Regional) contributed 7 kills to the attack.
Rutgers-Camden 3, Utica 0
In the second match of the day, Rutgers-Camden cruised to a 3-0 victory over Utica College. Final scores for the Scarlet Raptors' final match of the day were 25-13, 25-21, and 25-14.
Sophomore
Jamie Mulligan (New Gretna, NJ, Pinelands Regional) led the Scarlet Raptors in kills versus Utica, collecting a 16.
Wilkerson provided 7 and
Erskine added 6.
Wilkerson's deadly serve contributed 7 aces to the Scarlet Raptor attack, while
Gatling and
Lowe provided 3 and 2 respectively.
Erskine and
Gatling both provided the only blocks for Rutgers-Camden, as they were both credited for 2 each.
Lowe and
Marcano continued their dominance in setting up their teammates, as they provided 31 assists between both of them.
Lowe contributed 16 and
Marcano added 15.
Wilkerson led in digs, collecting 16, while
DiGiacomo contributed 11 to the defensive efforts of the Scarlet Raptors.
With the split decision on the day, Rutgers-Camden closes out regular season play at 16-15. The Scarlet Raptors will open up their chase for a New Jersey Athletic Conference volleyball championship when they travel to Stockton University on Tuesday, October 31
st, for a 7pm contest. The Scarlet Raptors are the #6 seed heading into the quarterfinal matchup versus Stockton, who secured the #3 seed.
