FROSTBURG, Md. (Nov. 17, 2017) – When the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team visited the Jim Crawley Tournament to open its season last November, it used a first-round victory over the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford as a springboard to the tourney championship.
The Scarlet Raptors are looking for the same scenario this season.
Rutgers-Camden used a 10-point third-quarter run to take the lead for good and senior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) broke the program's career assist record as the Scarlet Raptors defeated Pitt-Bradford, 74-63, on the opening night of the Jim Crawley Tournament Friday.
In the other opening-day game, host Frostburg State University defeated Bethany College, 76-53. Frostburg and Rutgers-Camden will play for the tourney title for the second straight season, with the tip-off at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Pitt-Bradford and Bethany will play the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Last year, the Scarlet Raptors beat Frostburg State in the title game, 81-70, with Racobaldo earning tournament MVP honors and guard
Fatimah Williams (Camden, NJ/Timber Creek), then a freshman, joining her on the all-tournament team.
Both of those players played a major role in Friday night's victory as Williams scored a game-high 19 points. Two of them came on a layup with 6:36 remaining in the game, assisted by Racobaldo. The assist, her sixth of the night, gave Racobaldo 362 for her stellar career, setting a new program record. The old mark of 361 was held by Rutgers-Camden Hall of Famer
Karla Robinson (1990-94).
Racobaldo,
pictured above, also added 12 points, tied Williams with a team-high nine rebounds and notched a game-high five steals.
Junior guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) and freshman guard
Jordan Harbaugh (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) both netted 13 points for the Scarlet Raptors. Greene dished off a game-high seven assists, while Harbaugh added six rebounds and four assists.
Senior forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) added 10 points for the Raptors, including six in the 10-point third-quarter run which lifted the Raptors from a 37-36 deficit to a 46-37 lead. Obasi started the run with a pair of free throws to put the Raptors on top for good and ended the run with a jumper. Rutgers-Camden outscored Pitt-Bradford, 28-13, in the decisive third quarter, breaking open what had been a 30-30 halftime deadlock.
Junior guard/forward
Ariel Robinson (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic), who opened her season with a double-double against Wilkes Wednesday night, grabbed eight rebounds against Pitt-Bradford. She added five points and four steals.
The Panthers received 18 points from senior guard
Ali Rinfrette (Bradford, PA/Bradford). Freshman guard
Shaelyn Snipes (Upper Marlboro, MD/Dr. Henry A. Wise) added 14 points. Freshman center
Brittany Button (Richburg, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds, helping the Panthers to a 51-45 advantage off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden's defense forced 23 turnovers by Pitt-Bradford.
