Flournoy helps Raptors rally past Gallaudet women

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 26, 2017) – For the first half of its non-conference game here Sunday, it seemed like the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team had fallen into an inescapable hole.

Yet after trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Scarlet Raptors went on a 22-6 run in the third quarter and outlasted host Gallaudet University, 68-64.

Leading 4-2, early in the game, the Scarlet Raptors (3-2) watched Gallaudet (1-3) rattle off 15 straight points, with 10 coming from junior guard/forward Hannah Neild (Litchfield, NH/Campbell). That run pushed the Bison into a 17-4 lead on their way to a 43-33 halftime bulge.

Just when it seemed like the Raptors' repeated efforts to slice their deficit would be in vain, Rutgers-Camden got everything back in one fell swoop. The Raptors scored the first 11 points of the third quarter, aided by six from sophomore forward Kirsten Flournoy (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek), to regain the lead at 44-43. After briefly losing that lead, they regained the advantage,46-45, on an offensive rebound and layup by senior forward/center Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic), who finished with eight points in the quarter. By the end of the third quarter, the Raptors held a 55-49 lead.

Gallaudet stormed right back, with Neild leading the way early in the fourth quarter. She notched seven points, including a trey, as the Bison surged back into a 60-59 advantage. Gallaudet hiked its margin to 63-59 before the Scarlet Raptors notched the next six points to take the lead for good. Flournoy had two layups in that run, bookended around a layup from sophomore guard Fatimah Williams (Camden, NJ/Timber Creek). Flournoy's second layup, following an offensive rebound, gave the Raptors the lead for good at 65-63.

After a foul shot by the Bison made it a 65-64 game, a pair of free throws by Flournoy and one from junior guard Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) accounted for the final margin.

Flournoy, pictured above, ended up with her first collegiate double-double, collecting career highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds. She also set a career high with four blocked shots and tied her career high of two assists.

Obasi also added a double-double with 16 points and 13 boards, hiking her career total to 633 rebounds and into ninth place on the program's all-time list. She passed Michelle Riley (1996-00), who had 629 career boards. Obasi went 6-for-8 from the floor to lift her career total to 404 field goals, reaching the NCAA minimum standard of 400 to qualify for career field goal percentage. With a .411 career field goal mark, she currently ranks sixth in Rutgers-Camden history.

Williams notched 14 points and senior guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) added 11 points. Racobaldo barely missed a double-double when she finished with a game-high nine assists, while adding a game-high six steals.

Greene notched one three-pointer, but it was enough to allow her to tie Maureen McGovern (1994-99) at 147 for second place on the program's career list of treys. The record of 172 is held by Alex Gravinese (2012-15).

Neild led the Bison with a game-high 24 points. Junior guard Sabrina Shysh (Tucson, AZ/Arizona School for the Deaf) had 10 rebounds to help Gallaudet to a 46-43 edge off the boards.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with an 8 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Rowan University.
