GLASSBORO, N.J. (Nov. 29, 2017) – For a brief span in the first quarter here Wednesday night, it looked like the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team was on the way to its first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the year.
The Scarlet Raptors had just rolled off an 11-point run to grab an 18-10 lead, but just as quickly, Rowan University responded. The Profs scored the last nine points of the first quarter and the first nine of the second quarter for an 18-point run. That run put Rowan ahead to stay as it went on to post a 77-66 NJAC victory.
The Profs improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Scarlet Raptors fall to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Rowan leads the all-time series, 52-16.
The Raptors' 11-point run, taking them from a 10-7 deficit to an 18-10 lead, included four points from sophomore guard
Fatimah Williams (Camden, NJ/Timber Creek). Rowan answered with the last nine points to take a 19-18 margin at the end of the quarter. Freshman forward
Paige Caldwell (Bridgeton, NJ/Woodstown) scored the last six points of the quarter, including a pair of foul shots to put the Profs ahead for good. Senior guard/forward
Alex Raring (Linwood, NJ/Mainland Regional) contributed five of the next nine points as the Profs opened up their lead to 28-18 to begin the second quarter.
Although Rutgers-Camden cut its deficit to 32-29 midway through the second quarter, by halftime the Profs held a 43-33 lead, with senior center
April Szymczyk (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) leading the way with 10 points. Senior forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) had 11 first-half points for the Scarlet Raptors, while junior guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) added nine.
Rowan stretched its lead to as many as 16 points (49-33) early in the third quarter before Rutgers-Camden whittled the margin to six (59-53) opening the fourth quarter. Szymczyk and senior guard
Summer Crilley (Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) answered with field goals, however, as the Profs pushed the margin back to 10 points, 63-53. The closest the Raptors came the rest of the way was seven points, late in the quarter, at 73-66.
Sophomore guard
Dominique Peters (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) finished with a game-high 20 points for the Profs, while Szymczyk netted 18 and Raring canned 13. Crilley added a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Obasi had her third double-double of the season for the Scarlet Raptors, netting 15 points and 10 rebounds. Williams,
pictured above, also scored 15 points, while Greene netted 14 points and a game-high four assists. Twelve of Greene's points came on four treys as she took sole possession of second place on the program's career list of three-pointers, hiking her total to 151.
Senior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) collected 10 points, a game-high six steals and six rebounds, while freshman guard
Jordan Harbaugh (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) also added six boards to go with four points, three steals and two assists.
Rowan shot 28-for-64 (43.8 percent) from the field, while Rutgers-Camden went 27-for-73 (37.0). The Raptors held a slim 42-39 edge off the boards, but they also had five more turnovers in a turnover-filled game, 30-25.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it hosts New Jersey City University in a 1 p.m. NJAC game.
