CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 12, 2017) – Entering the second half of their non-conference game here Tuesday night, the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team seemed to be in control as they attempted to win their third straight game to end the semester.
After scoring the first field goal of the third quarter to take a 14-point lead, however, everything fell apart for the Scarlet Raptors as they watched Arcadia University roar back to capture a 62-60 victory.
The Knights' win snapped their three-game losing streak and lifted Arcadia to 4-5. Rutgers-Camden, which had won its last two games and three of its previous four, fell to 6-5 in its last game of the calendar year. The Scarlet Raptors won't play again until Jan. 3 with a 5:30 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Ramapo College.
Raptor senior forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic), who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th career point Saturday night, hit a jumper to open the third quarter and give Rutgers-Camden a 40-26 lead. After the Knights answered with a jumper of their own, Raptor senior guard/forward
Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) restored the 14-point lead with her own field goal, making it a 42-28 game.
Rutgers-Camden scored only three more points the rest of the quarter as Arcadia roared back to take a 47-45 lead entering the final quarter. Sophomore forward
Jamie Manzo (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had seven of her 17 points in the third quarter, as Arcadia outscored Rutgers-Camden, 21-7. The Knights, who trailed by a 9-0 score right out of the gate, took their first lead of the night with 2:33 remaining in the third quarter on a trey by sophomore forward
Taylor Dunn (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South).
Both teams scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, which saw the score tied four times and the Raptors regain a three-point lead on two occasions (58-55 and 60-57) before Arcadia fought back. The biggest plays of the game were made by Dunn down the stretch after the Scarlet Raptors had taken their 60-57 lead on a jumper by junior guard/forward
Ariel Robinson (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) with 1:43 remaining.
Dunn was fouled while making a layup and sank her free throw with 1:21 left, tying the game at 60-60. After Rutgers-Camden missed a shot with 23 seconds remaining, sophomore guard
Sydney Cyr (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) grabbed the rebound for Arcadia, which ran down the clock under 10 seconds before Dunn was fouled attempting a field goal. She sank both of her foul shots to finish with a game-high 18 points. Rutgers-Camden's final attempt to tie the game missed with one second remaining.
While Dunn and Manzo led the Knights' attack with their 18 and 17 points, respectively, Cyr and junior forward
Camille Menns (New Brunswick, NJ/The Wardlaw-Hartridge School) were helping the Knights to a 45-37 advantage off the boards. Cyr finished with a game-high 13 boards. Menns, who injured her ankle on a fall under the basket and missed the final 4:47 of the game, finished with 11 rebounds and eight points.
Dunn added a team-high five assists for Arcadia.
Racobaldo,
pictured above, had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Scarlet Raptors, hiking her program-record career assist total over the 400 plateau to 404.
Obasi notched 14 points and a team-high nine boards and junior guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) collected 11 points and a game-high five steals.
Robinson finished with seven points and eight boards for the Scarlet Raptors, while sophomore guard
Fatimah Williams (Camden, NJ/Timber Creek) had a game-high six assists to go along with five points and four boards.
Arcadia shot 24-for-61 (39.3 percent) from the floor, but a blistering 12-for-13 (92.3) from the foul line. Dunn went 7-for-7 from the line.
Rutgers-Camden shot 24-for-65 (36.9) and only 8-for-14 (57.1) from the foul line.
