CAMDEN, N.J. (Dec. 4, 2017) – The Neumann University women's basketball team overcame an early nine-point deficit, outscored Rutgers University-Camden, 13-1 over the final three minutes of the first half and went on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, 77-69, in a non-conference game here Monday night.
The Knights improve to 5-3, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 4-4.
Rutgers-Camden scored the first nine points of the game, including five by junior guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell), but Neumann answered with the next seven points to climb right back into the game. The Knights tied the game at 11-11, took their first lead at 20-19 early in the second quarter on a layup by junior center
Mariah Maciejewski (Dunmore, PA/Dunfore) and then fell behind, 29-27, before storming back to grab a 10-point halftime lead, 40-30. A jumper by freshman guard
Minika Glenn (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) tied the game at 29-29 and she followed with a three-pointer, giving Neumann the lead for good.
Rutgers-Camden, which trailed by as many as 17 points (58-41) in the second half, never got closer than six points (73-67) the rest of the way. Trailing by 73-63 with 47 seconds remaining, the Raptors cut that gap to 73-67 on a foul shot by freshman guard
Shane Holmes (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and a three-pointer by Greene in the last minute. The Knights answered with four foul shots in a 13-second span to hike their lead back to 10 points, before the Raptors scored the last field goal of the game.
Junior guard
Nafisa Saunders (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville), who came into the game with a team-high scoring average of 14.9 points, notched a game-high 20 points for Neumann. Freshman guard
Lauren Leicht (Briarcliffe, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) collected 13 points and a team-high four assists, while giving Neumann a spark off the bench when it trailed early in the game.
Glenn finished with 11 points and a team-high seven boards for the Knights, while Maciejewski added 10 points and six boards.
Greene finished with 17 points to pace Rutgers-Camden, including four three-pointers to hike her career total to 159. She needs 13 more treys to tie the program's career mark, set by Alex Gravinese (2012-15).
Rutgers-Camden also received 16 points and eight rebounds from senior forward/center
Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic), who is chasing a milestone of her own. With 983 career points, she is 17 shy of becoming the 12th player in program history to notch 1,000 points.
Sophomore guard
Fatimah Williams (Camden, NJ/Timber Creek), pictured above, added a stellar game with 14 points and game-high totals of five assists and four steals.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Stockton University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
