Raptors' fourth-quarter rally falls short against TCNJ women

Box Score

EWING, N.J. (Jan. 17, 2018) – Sophomore forward Kirsten Flournoy (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) led a fourth-quarter rally that allowed the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team to take its first lead since the end of the opening quarter, but The College of New Jersey regained the upper hand and held off the Scarlet Raptors, 50-45, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.

TCNJ improves to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the NJAC, sweeping the season series from the Scarlet Raptors after winning a narrow 75-72 game in Camden on Nov. 21. The Lions lead the all-time series, 56-12.

Rutgers-Camden falls to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the conference with its third straight loss.

Trailing, 35-28, entering the final quarter, the Scarlet Raptors went on a 17-8 run, finally overtaking the Lions, 45-43, on a three-pointer by junior guard Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) with 1:50 remaining. Flournoy had 12 of her game-high 18 points in that fourth-quarter run as she tied her career scoring high set on Nov. 26 at Gallaudet University.

That 45-43 lead was the Raptors' first advantage since ending the first quarter with a 14-12 edge, but the lead didn't last for long. Moments after Greene's trey, TCNJ senior guard Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, NJ/Morris Catholic) hit a three-pointer of her own, giving the Lions a 46-45 edge. TCNJ closed out its win with a layup by freshman forward Shannon Devitt (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and a pair of foul shots by sophomore forward Jen Byrne (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) in the last minute.

Both Byrne and Devitt finished with double-doubles for the Lions. Byrne had a team-high 14 points and added 11 rebounds, while Devitt scored 13 and had a game-high 14 boards. Junior guard Kate O'Leary (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) added 10 points for the Lions.

While scoring her 18 points, Flournoy (pictured above) shot 8-for-10 from the field, including 1-for-1 from three-point range. She also went 1-for-1 from the foul line, added five rebounds and had a game-high two blocked shots.

Senior forward/center Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) notched eight points, eight rebounds and three assists, while freshman guard Jordan Harbaugh (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) also added eight points and three assists. Greene finished with seven points and a game-high four steals, while senior guard/forward Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) notched six rebounds and a game-high nine assists. Sophomore guard Lajerah Wright (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) also added six rebounds, setting her career high.

Rutgers-Camden shot 20-for-54 (37.0 percent) from the field, while TCNJ was 18-for-65 (27.7). Both teams struggled from three-point range, with the Raptors going 4-for-20 (20.0) and the Lions 4-for-28 (14.3). TCNJ, however, went 10-for-13 (76.9) from the foul line, while Rutgers-Camden was only 1-for-3 (33.3).

TCNJ also held a 49-33 advantage off the boards and made three fewer turnovers (15-12).

Rutgers-Camden plays another NJAC road game Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest at New Jersey City University.
