Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) added to their numerous career milestones, as the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team defeated Rutgers University-Newark, 60-52, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raptors improve to 11-8 overall and 8-5 in the NJAC with their third straight victory, while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 7-13 overall and 2-11 in the NJAC. Newark now leads the all-time series, 37-29.
Racobaldo dished off a game-high nine assists to hike her season total to 108, making her the first player in program history to post 100-plus assists in all four of her collegiate seasons. She hiked her program career-record mark to 460.
Obasi, meanwhile, collected nine points to raise her career total to 1,119 and move into ninth place on the all-time list. She passed both Nelly Cruz (1,113 from 1988-91) and Tara Harris (1,117 from 1984-88).
With the score tied at 19-19 midway through the first second quarter, Wright hit a layup to put Rutgers-Camden ahead to stay, 21-19, and spark a 12-6 run to end the opening half, helping the Scarlet Raptors to a 31-25 lead.
Rutgers-Newark cut its deficit to three points several times in the second half, the last time at 45-42 early in the fourth quarter, but Rutgers-Camden rattled off the next eight points. Four of them, on a trey and a foul shot, came from freshman guard
Shane Holmes (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape).
In addition to 13 points apiece from Racobaldo and Wright, the Scarlet Raptors received 10 points – all in the opening half – from junior guard/forward
Ariel Robinson (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic). Obasi added her nine points and junior guard
Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) collected eight.
Racobaldo,
pictured above, came close to a
triple double, finishing with her nine assists and adding seven rebounds. Wright, who had a career high with her 13 points, also led the team with career highs of nine rebounds and two blocked shots, while Obasi also added seven boards.
Rutgers-Newark received 19 points from junior guard
Faith Ashby (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck), while freshman guard
Ania Harrell (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) collected a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior forward
Nicole Skelly (Belleville, NJ/Immaculate Conception) added 13 points for the Scarlet Raiders.
Rutgers-Camden shot 26-for-60 (43.3 percent) from the field, while Rutgers-Newark shot 17-for-56 (30.4). The Scarlet Raiders held a slim 43-41 edge off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday with an 8 p.m. NJAC game at Stockton University.
