Women's tennis clinches second place in NJAC

Box score

NEWARK, N.J. (Oct. 6, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's tennis team seems to set new standards every time it plays, but Saturday's accomplishments surpassed even the lofty standards that the young Scarlet Raptors have set this season.

Rutgers-Camden defeated Rutgers-Newark, 7-0, here Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match as the Scarlet Raptors wrapped up sole possession of second place in the NJAC standings. It was the first time since the Raptors restarted their program in the fall of 2011 that they had finished second in the standings. They trailed only The College of New Jersey, which has never lost a NJAC match since the conference started women's tennis in 1982.

The victory was the sixth straight for Rutgers-Camden, lifting the Raptors' record to 7-1 overall. It also hiked their NJAC mark to 5-1, setting a new program record for conference wins. Rutgers-Camden had entered Saturday's match tied with its 1985 team, which finished at 4-1 in NJAC play.

The Scarlet Raptors won all seven of their completed matches on Saturday and were leading in the other two before rain wiped out the chance for a 9-0 sweep. Juniors Aubrey Hawn and Danielle Lemma both led their matches at first and second singles, respectively, by 6-1, 2-0 scores before being rained out.

In doubles competition, Hawn and freshman LeAnne Hall posted an 8-1 victory in the top spot, while Lemma and freshman Tiffany Trivers added an 8-1 win at second doubles. The third doubles team of freshmen Hannah Cohan and Morgan Dempsey won by forfeit when Newark didn't have enough players. Both Dempsey and Cohan also won by forfeit in the fifth and sixth singles spots, respectively, due to a lack of Scarlet Raider players.

In the two singles matches that were played to completion, Trivers and Hall both won by 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at the third and fourth spots, respectively.

Lemma's doubles victory gave her 14 career doubles wins, tying her for fourth place on the program's career list. It also gave her a combined 30 wins, coupled with her 16 singles victories. She becomes only the fifth player in program history to reach the 30-win plateau.

The Scarlet Raptors also climbed onto the program's single-season charts. The doubles teams of Hawn and Hall (6-1 in doubles) and Lemma/Trivers (6-3) both recorded their sixth doubles victory with the same partner, tying for fourth place on the season chart.

Trivers, pictured above, increased her team-leading singles record to 7-1 heading into the Scarlet Raptors' last match of the semester. They close the fall portion of their schedule on Sunday when they host Ursinus College at 1 p.m.
